RHP Josiah Gray (7-6, 4.40 ERA) pitches for the Nationals and RHP Mitch White (1-2, 3.78 ERA) does the same for the Dodgers. One-time Dodger (2 games, 1 start, 6.75 ERA in 8 innings before being traded to the Nats in the 2021 Scherzer & Turner deal) Gray has had a lousy July, going 1-2 with a 7.02 ERA in three starts. White has been pretty good for the Dodgers in 9 starts since May 21; although he’s 0-2 he’s got a 3.45 ERA in 40 2/3 innings.

The Jackie Robinson Museum held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today at its location in Lower Manhattan. It officially opens on September 5.

Featuring 4,500 artifacts and 40,000 historical images, the museum strives to achieve Rachel Robinson’s goal to inspire future generations to be the next group of leaders in the fight for social justice. These artifacts include letters, clothing, accolades, a timeline of his life and insightful videos throughout the museum that bring Robinson’s journey to life, detailing his accomplishments as a baseball player and civil rights pioneer.

  • 1948 Former Dodger skipper Leo Durocher, who left the team ten days ago, makes his first appearance at Ebbets Field since taking over the Giants. The return of ‘the Lip’ is less-than-triumphant when his new team drops a 13-4 decision to Brooklyn.
  • 1951 In a 9-1 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Jim Russell becomes the first player in major league history to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in a game in two different games. The Dodger outfielder’s accomplishment will be surpassed in 1956 when Yankee slugger Mickey Mantle goes deep both right and left-handed in the same game for a third time.
  • 1960 The Phillies end their scoreless streak of thirty-eight consecutive innings when Johnny Callison plates Tony Gonzalez with a sixth-inning single in the team’s 4-3 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Philadelphia’s drought began when the team failed to score in the last six frames of a 3-0 win against the Giants, and continued when they were shut out in three straight games ( 2-0, 2-0, and 9-0) by the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
  • 1991 Mark Gardner no-hits the Dodgers for nine innings, but Los Angeles wins the game in the bottom of the tenth on two singles off the Expos’ starter and Darryl Strawberry’s RBI single off reliever Jeff Fassero. It’s the first time the Dodgers had been held hitless at home for nine innings since Johnny Vander Meer’s second straight no-hitter in 1938.

RHP Cal Quantrill (4-3, 3.38 ERA) goes for the Guardians and LHP Julio Urías (3-6, 2.80 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. Quantrill was sick before his last start, but he recovered well enough. “His stomach settled down in the second or third inning and he did as well. The A’s second batter, Ramon Laureano, touched him for a solo shot to the Home Run Porch in left field. It was the only run Quantrill surrendered in his six innings. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out four.” Urías “allowed two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out 10 in six innings, but he took the loss Sunday versus the Giants. Despite allowing only eight runs in his last 23.1 innings, Urias has now gone four starts without a win.” Last year he got plenty of run support; this year he’s gotten very little.

The left-hander’s teammate Josh Beckett also threw a no-hitter 24 days ago, making it the shortest span between no-hitters by a team since the Reds’ Johnny Vander Meer accomplished it in consecutive starts, four days apart, in 1938.

LHP Reid Detmers (2-2, 3.83 ERA) is on the bump for the Angels while LHP Tyler Anderson (7-0, 3.07 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers. Detmers was the 10th pick in the first round of the 2020 draft; he made his major league debut in August of 2021. He’s made ten appearances this season, all starts. Anderson has, with Gonsolin, been a very pleasant surprise for the Dodgers, who’ve needed all the help they could get in the rotation with Kershaw’s and Heaney’s absences, and the Tony and Tyler show has given it to them.

  • 1938 In the first night game played in New York City, Johnny Vander Meer pitches his second consecutive no-hitter, beating the Dodgers at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field, 6-0. Four days ago, the Reds’ southpaw held the Braves hitless in a 3-0 victory at Crosley Field.
  • 1951 The Cubs trade Andy Pafko along with Johnny Schmitz, Wayne Terwilliger, and Rube Walker to the Dodgers for Bruce Edwards, Joe Hatten, Eddie Miksis, and Gene Hermanski. The deal, which prevents the coveted ‘Handy Andy’ from going to the rival Giants, is the first of many to be made by Buzzy Bavasi, Brooklyn’s new general manager.
  • 1996 In the first inning of their 6-2 victory over the Braves, the Dodgers turn their first triple play in forty-seven years. LHP Clayton Kershaw (4-0, 1.80 ERA) comes off the IL, where he’d been with a sacroiliac inflammation. He’ll start today in place of Urías, who’s getting an extra day of rest before starting tomorrow. He’ll face the Giants’ LHP Sam Long (0-1, 2.35 ERA). This will be his 12th appearance but just his 4th start this season. He’s gone no longer than three innings in any game yet.

  • 1957 The Dodgers’ Roy Campanella surpasses former Cub and Giant backstop Gabby Hayes to establish a new National League mark when he hits his 237th career round-tripper as a catcher. Campy’s historic home run comes off Ray Crone in the seventh inning of Brooklyn’s 7-2 loss to the Braves at Ebbets Field.
  • 1972 LA outfielders Manny Mota and Willie Davis both hit inside-the-park homers down the foul lines at Dodger Stadium off Bucs’ starter Bruce Kison. Roberto Clemente’s seventh inning home run over the fence proves to be the difference in Pittsburgh’s 7-5 victory, their 21st win the last 26 games.

Also, in 1938 In the first of two consecutive no-hitters he will hurl, Johnny Vander Meer keeps the Boston Bees hitless in Cincinnati’s 3-0 victory at Crosley Field. The Rangers send the hard-luck RHP Mike Foltynewicz (1-6, 4.75 ERA) to the Dodger Stadium mound to face the Dodgers’ LHP Clayton Kershaw (7-5, 3.66 ERA). Foltynewicz has several quality starts in April and May despite his six losses. Kershaw has only faced the Rangers twice in his career.

Rookie RHP Shaun Anderson (2-1, 3.97 ERA) faces the Dodgers for the first time in his career, whereas LHP Clayton Kershaw (6-1, 3.13 ERA) has a 22-11 record and a 1.72 ERA against the Giants. Anderson has had a good June: he’s made three consecutive quality starts. Kershaw gave up two HRs to the Cubs in his last start but got a six-inning win anyway.
