Dodgers at Phillies, 10:35 AM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSP, SPNLA
The Dodgers are making this a bullpen game and they haven’t named their opener yet. The Phillies hand the ball to RHP Iaijuan Walker (5-3, 5.04 ERA).
The Dodgers selected the contract of LHP Adam Kolarek, optioned RHP Andre Jackson and transferred OF Trayce Thompson to the 60-day injured list.

- 1957 The Dodgers’ Roy Campanella surpasses former Cub and Giant backstop Gabby Hayes to establish a new National League mark when he hits his 237th career round-tripper as a catcher. Campy’s historic home run comes off Ray Crone in the seventh inning of Brooklyn’s 7-2 loss to the Braves at Ebbets Field.
- 1972 LA outfielders Manny Mota and Willie Davis both hit inside-the-park homers down the foul lines at Dodger Stadium off Bucs’ starter Bruce Kison. Roberto Clemente’s seventh inning home run over the fence proves to be the difference in Pittsburgh’s 7-5 victory, their 21st win the last 26 games.
Also, in 1938 in the first of two consecutive no-hitters he will hurl, Johnny Vander Meer keeps the Boston Bees hitless in Cincinnati’s 3-0 victory at Crosley Field. The Reds’ southpaw, in the first night game played in Brooklyn, continues his no-no mojo four days later by beating the Dodgers, 6-0, without giving up a hit in the Ebbets Field contest.

This may not be a first, but it’s gotta be pretty rare.

A 33-year-old journeyman, Andriese is no prospect, but Sheehan definitely is and Karros’s numbers are far better than one would expect from a 16th-rounder..
Tigres put in a pitcher who can’t throw strikes and now they’ve blown the lead, surrendering fourth in the ninth to trail 7-5.
And, in fact, they did not hold on. The Tigers are down 7-5 going to the bottom of the 9th.
In the Motor City this morning, Tigres hold a 5-2 lead over Snakes after 6-1/2. Old friend McKinstry, who’s having a pretty good season hitting leadoff for Detroit, has contributed a two-run dinger.
Rox enter the ninth trailing Pads 4-3, then get two solo dingers to walk it off.
We will be limping back home, 3 1/2 games out of first.
Pathetic effort today.
Worst road trip in my recent memory.
Taylor has become one of the “three true outcomes” guys, even though he doesn’t physically resemble them. Man, he’s frustrating when he’s at bat.
Two outcome. He doesn’t walk very much.
Always seems to be swinging for the fences. On defense, he is versatile and excellent.
I predict that Taylor will homer or fan.
KT3.
He now his 60 Ks in 151 ABs (also 10 HRs).
As Jack Webb, as Sgt. Friday, used to say on Dragnet, “Just the facts….”
Max Muncy:
March/April — .238, 11 HRs, 22 RBIs
May — .186, 6 HRs, 18 RBIs
June — .097, 1 HR, 4 RBI (including today’s game)
He is on pace to hit over 40 homers and drive in well over 100 runs.
The fact is; our bullpen sucks, our starting rotation is injury riddled, and our offense is inconsistent.
True, true and true.
And yet, still in a strong position to reach the post-season.
I guess Robertson is not all that.
We are playing like a second tier team at the moment.
Pitching like one, anyway.
Because there is no third tier?
Ugh.
Gloves are not friendly to Max.
Rockets over the fence are not caught, even by the fans.
I don’t like Heyward in CF.
He’s OK, but no outfielder on this team is Cody.
Rockets are hitting Fillie gloves.
Or should that be “foal?”
Meanwhile, pop flies are finding grass for the Phillies.
And dinkers are landing.
LAT’d: Paul Casella of MLB has some nice things to say about Bobby Miller’s begiinning of his career.
Whatever happened to LAT, I wonder.
Does anyone know why Gonsolin didn’t start today.? He would have been pitching on four days’ rest.

Thanks, WBBsAs.
Or what Doc said.
If I were to guess it is because Julio was scheduled for today and when he was pulled Gonsolin was working for a start on the 13th. Perhaps he did his between start bullpen session before they knew about Julio.
Some bad luck for Fergy. All the hits were off good pitches. Gonna need the offense to show up today.
Tigres wriggle out of bad trouble in eighth, still lead Snakes 5-3.
Some sort of delay, it seems.
Fergie to open.
As noted on TBLA, he can’t give up a walkoff today. Rest of the bullpen is well-positioned, thanks to the Miller/Jackson effort yesterday.
