2023 Hot Stove League #2

Other than the Phillies resigning Aaron Nola and asserting that Bryce Harper will remain at first base, thus blocking Rhys Hoskins’ return to his long-held position, not much has happened so far in this off-season. The Dodgers and White Sox are rumored to have discussed a trade for the Sox RHP Dylan Cease (7-9, 4.58 ERA in 2023, 43-35, 3.83 ERA lifetime), but no Dodger prospects’ names have been made public yet.

Game 69, 2023

White Sox at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSCH, SPNLA

RHP Dylan Cease (3-3, 4.38 ERA) pitches for the visiting Pale Hose and RHP Michael Grove (0-2, 8.28 ERA) gets the ball for the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1938 In the first night game played in New York City, Johnny Vander Meer pitches his second consecutive no-hitter, beating the Dodgers at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field, 6-0. Four days ago, the Reds’ southpaw held the Braves hitless in a 3-0 victory at Crosley Field.
  • 1951 The Cubs trade Andy Pafko along with Johnny Schmitz, Wayne Terwilliger, and Rube Walker to the Dodgers for Bruce Edwards, Joe Hatten, Eddie Miksis, and Gene Hermanski. The deal, which prevents the coveted ‘Handy Andy’ from going to the rival Giants, is the first of many to be made by Buzzie Bavasi, Brooklyn’s new general manager.
  • 1996 In the first inning of their 6-2 victory over the Braves, the Dodgers turn their first triple play in forty-seven years. After making a running, back-to-the-plate grab of Chipper Jones’s popup to short left with runners on first and second, Juan Castro throws to second baseman Delino Deshields to double up Marquis Grissom, then the ball is relayed to first baseman Eric Karros to get Mark Lemke, who was also running on the pitch.

Game 57, 2022

Dodgers at White Sox, 11:10 AM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSCH, SPNLA

LHP Tyler Anderson (7-0, 2.59 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and RHP Dylan Cease (4-2, 3.39 ERA) goes for the Pale Hose. With Gonsolin Anderson is the other surprising member of the Dodgers’ rotation this season. Cease missed his team’s trip to Toronto last week due to his unvaccinated status.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1919 Dodger standout pitcher Rube Marquard breaks his leg running the bases, ending his season with a record of 3-3. The hard-throwing southpaw will finish his 18-year Hall of Fame career in 1925, after compiling a 201-177 record along with an ERA of 3.08.
  • 1973 Right-fielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, ‘Le Grand Orange’ gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first, and then throws home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.
  • 1990 Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle’s major league mark, hitting a homer from both sides of the plate for the tenth time in his career. The switch-hitting first baseman’s second home run of the game, batting left-handed against Eric Show, proves to be the eventual winning run in the Dodgers’ 5-4 victory over San Diego in the 11th inning at Jack Murphy Stadium.

ALDS Games Three, 2021

Game One: Rays at Red Sox, 1:07 PM PDT, TV: MLBN

RHP Drew Rasmussen (0-1, 4.24 ERA) pitches for the Rays and RHP Nathan Eovaldi (11-9, 3.75 ERA) does so for the Sox.

Game Two: Astros at White Sox, 5:07 PM PDT, TV: FS1

The Astros send RHP Luis Garcia (11-8, 3.30 ERA) to the hill to face RHP Dylan Cease (13-7, 3.91 ERA) of the White Sox.

On this date in baseball history Bill Wambsganss pulled off an unassisted triple play in the World Series (against Brooklyn, of course) in 1920. Lew Burdette is named MVP of the 1957 World Series for winning three complete games in the Braves’ defeat of the Yankees. Mickey Lolich of the Tigers outdueled Bob Gibson of the Cardinals to win the Series for his team in 1968. There’s a lot more to be seen at the link.
