Game 89, 2016

Padres at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

Andrew Cashner (3-6, 4.42 ERA) goes for the Padres while Scott Kazmir (7-3, 4.37 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. Here’s a bit of a surprise: Kazmir hasn’t lost in his last ten starts. Cashner pitched well in his first start last Sunday after coming off the DL, giving up just two runs in six innings against the Yankees.

A-Gon has been very successful against Cashner; he’s hit .344/.432/.750 with four homers. Likewise, Alexei Ramirez and Adam Rosales have a combined .930 OPS in 62 plate appearances against Kazmir from their days in the AL when he was there.

Lineup when available.

Game 44, 2016

Dodgers at Padres, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD, MLBN (out-of-market only)

Starting for the Dodgers today is lefty Alex Wood (1-3, 4.17 ERA), who has been pretty successful recently: in his last four starts he’s gone 24 1/3 innings, striking out 30 and posting a 2.59 ERA. The Padres send out righthander Cesar Vargas, who’s 0-2 with a 3.55 ERA and may be pitching to stay in the big leagues, as Andrew Cashner will come off the DL this week and the Padres will have to make room for him.

Adrian Gonzalez is expected to return to the Dodgers’ starting lineup tonight after several days off with back tightness. Matt Kemp has made trouble for Wood in the past, going 5-for-9 with a home run and double against him.

Game 43, 2016

Dodgers at Padres, 7:40PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

Scott Kazmir (3-3, 4.89 ERA) hopes to continue the pitching which got him within an out of a complete game win last time out. He’ll face Christian Friedrich (0-1, 1.50 ERA), who made his Padres debut last week, going six innings and throwing 116 pitches while walking six. He’s a callup from AAA El Paso to replace Andrew Cashner and his balky hamstring.

Dodger manager Dave Roberts says Adrian Gonzalez won’t start but will be able to pinch-hit tonight and get back in the starting lineup tomorrow.

Danger, Will Robinson! Matt Kemp is hitting .317/.371/.463 in 89 plate appearances against the Dodgers.

Lineup:

Pederson sits tonight, presumably because Friedrich is left-handed.

Game 3, 2016

Dodgers at Padres, 6:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

Two righthanders face off: newcomer Kenta Maeda meets Andrew Cashner. Maeda is fresh off an 8-year career in the Japan Central League with Hiroshima in which he was 97-67 with a 2.39 ERA; Cashner is in his 7th year in the big leagues with a record of 26-42 and an ERA of 3.59. He went 0-3 against the Dodgers last year but had a 3.38 ERA, getting little to no run support in three of his four starts against them.

The Dodgers have to be greatly encouraged by Yasiel Puig’s performance in the first two games, with 2 triples among his 3 hits in 6 ABs and 3 RBIs already.

Lineup when available.

Game 136, 2015

Dodgers at Padres, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

Brett Anderson (8-8, 3.43 ERA) goes for the Dodgers, while Andrew Cashner (5-13, 4.15 ERA) pitches for the Padres. Anderson is looking for his third straight win and fourth in his last five starts. He’ll have to do it against a lineup he’s mostly never seen; the last time he faced the Padres was in 2009 when he was with Oakland. Cashner’s record is a little misleading; he’s had 22 unearned runs scored against him in his 26 starts.

Anderson is in uncharted territory. He’s pitched more innings (152 1/3) than he has since his rookie year in 2009 when he threw 175 1/3. He’s got more quality starts this year (16) than he’s ever had in a season. The difference is that he’s been healthy all year.

“It takes a while to get this body going,” Anderson joked. “I have to get here a little bit earlier than most guys and do my core stuff and back stuff. It’s not fun, but it’s one of those necessary evils. I’d rather not have to do it, but it’s the cards I was dealt with.”

Lineup:

Huh. Turner at second, Seager at third. Oh well, why not?

Game 41, 2015

Padres at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

The last time the Padres’ Andrew Cashner faced the Dodgers, Adrian Gonzalez whacked three home runs while he was pitching. Cashner’s been better since, although his record doesn’t show it. He’s 1-7 this season but he’s got a 3.24 ERA. He is 1-4 with a 2.22 ERA lifetime against the Dodgers and 0-2 this year.

He’ll face Zack Greinke, who lost his first game of the season last week against the Rockies even though he only gave up one run in six innings. This will be his third start against the Padres this season, and he’s given up one run in 13 innings so far. In nine career starts against San Diego, Greinke is 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA.

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times asks “What happened to the Padres?” as he looks at their 20-22 record this season and compares it to the high expectations the team had going into 2015. And what can we expect of this series? Shaikin says if you’re cynical you’ll say the pitchers will win. “The Padres have not scored in 14 innings. The Dodgers have not scored in 31 innings.”

Game 16, 2015

Dodgers at Padres, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, Fox Sports SD

Zack Greinke goes to the hill to play stopper for the Dodgers after their unexpected and aggravating series sweep at the hands of the Giants. He’s 2-0 on the season with a 1.83 ERA on 12 hits, 2 walks and 14 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings. He’ll face San Diego’s Andrew Cashner, who has lost two of his first three starts but has seen his ERA drop from 9.00 after the first game (which he lost to the Dodgers April 8) to 2.65 now. He’s striking out better than one man per inning while walking two per game.

Lineup when available.

Game Three, 2015

Padres at Dodgers, 7:10PT, TV: SNLA Spanish, SportsNet LA, ESPN2

Each team has won one game in the opening Clash of the Titans of the NL West, so tonight is the rubber match. The Padres send out Andrew Cashner, who’s 1-2 lifetime against the Dodgers. Don’t let that fool you, though. He’s got a 1.53 ERA with 45 Ks in 53 innings against the home team. His opponent will be Brandon McCarthy, who last year had a 2.61 ERA against the Padres in two starts for the D-Backs, giving up one run in 14 innings.

Adrian Gonzalez is 6 for 9 (.667) to start the season, with 2 singles, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 runs scored. Jimmy Rollins and Howie Kendrick are each 3 for 8 (.375), Carl Crawford is 2 for 6, and nobody else has more than one hit.

Game 145, 2014

Padres at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD

Roberto Hernandez attempts to get his game back in order after struggling his last three starts, going 1-2 with a 6.46 ERA and .322 batting average against. He’ll face Andrew Cashner, who’s making his fourth start since hitting the disabled list with right shoulder soreness. In his previous three starts back, he is 0-1 with a 2.50 ERA.
