Things I hadn’t known before

Two historical facts I got from reading Dan Okrent’s Last Call about Prohibition:

1. Congress didn’t reapportion House legislative districts after the Census of 1920 because for the first time there were more Americans in cities than in rural districts. The Drys dominated the rural districts and were afraid that a) they’d lose seats and b) the 18th Amendment would be legislatively challenged if they reapportioned as required by law. So they didn’t do it. The fight went on for years until the Reapportionment Act of 1929 was finally passed. I never knew that.

2. Despite all rumor, there is no evidence that Joseph P. Kennedy ever made a dime by bootlegging. All his liquor money was earned legally.
