Game 84, 2023

Pirates at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: ATTSportsNet-PIT, SPNLA

RHP Mitch Keller (9-3, 3.34 ERA) takes the mound for the Pirates and the Dodgers will send an as-yet unnamed pitcher RHP Michael Grove (0-2, 7.54 ERA) to the hill.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1925 Milt Stock sets a National League mark by having his fourth consecutive four-hit game, going 16-for-23 during the span to compile a .696 batting average. The 31 year-old second baseman’s offensive output, which includes three singles and a triple, helps the Robins beat the Giants at Ebbets Field, 6-3.
  • 1949 En route to a 16-0 shutout of the Dodgers at the Polo Grounds, starting pitcher Monte Kennedy hits a grand slam. Another 51 seasons will pass by before another Giants hurler hits a four-run homer when Shawn Estes accomplishes the feat in 2000.
  • 1958 In their 35th home date in L.A., the transplanted Dodgers reach the one million mark in attendance. Last season, the team drew only 1,028,258 fans, playing in Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field.
  • 2013 Yasiel Puig becomes the first player to be named Player of the Month for the first month he plays in the major leagues in the 55-year history of the award. The Dodger outfielder played in 26 games in June, compiling a .436 batting average, with his 44 base hits being the second-most ever by a first-month player, only behind Joe DiMaggio’s total of 48 in 1936.

    • Quite!

(He was in the system for a while though wasn’t he. A top prospect?)

    • Joe Ely a favorite of mine, in particular his collaboration with Dutch flamenco guitarist, Teye. Jimmie Dale also sings a nice tune.

      • Joe was missing yesterday, recovering from pneumonia in Tejas. Angela Strehli joined the band for a few songs, and Dave Alvin will be there tomorrow (this is a three-day event at Rancho Nicasio, which is a great live music venue, with barbecues on the lawn throughout summer weekends).

        • Hadn’t known until reading up on him now that Joe collaborated with the Clash.

  1. Gnats mount a comeback, but not enough to overcome Doval’s All-Star performance, final score 6-5 Seattle.

  2. Just kinda realized they didn’t do God Bless America at the 2 games I was at.

  3. Woah. Freddie almost slammed his helmet down after that fly out. Not used to seeing him so visibly upset.

  4. At Software Stadium, the M’s have hit Gnats’ “All-Star” closer Doval for three runs in the ninth and are threatening more – 5-2 Seattle.

  5. I’m thinking Brasier is someone who will slide down the bullpen depth chart after the trade deadline.

  6. Paddies have extended lead over Angles. M’s and Gnat tied in ninth, but Seattle has leadoff hitter aboard and then a stolen base.

  7. M’s and Gnats gnow tied 2-2 after 6-1/2. Angles trailing 4-2 but threatening at The Litterbox,

  8. Bit early for Caleb normally, but firejumper spot with the top of the order.

  9. Only one long inning for Keller. The rest he has cruised.

    And then he dings Vargas.

  10. Grove did well through his 4 innings. And had 2 big outs on the bases to help him out.

  11. My hometown Mariners (who should rightly be the Rainiers) have taken a 1-0 lead over the Gnats in the fourth).

  12. Rodolfo is I think my favourite (or favorite for my American friends) first name in MLB.

      • As I recall you are rather strict when it comes to passed balls, wanting them to be charged even with no one on base.

  13. In case people hadn’t noticed, today’s game is free on MLBTV (as is every other Dodgers game through Friday).
