Pirates at Dodgers, 6:10 PM PDT, TV: ATTSportsNet-PIT, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

RHP Luis L. Ortiz (2-3, 4.11 ERA) pitches for the visiting Pirates and RHP Emmet Sheehan (2-0, 2.65 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1884 In American Association action, Louisville right-hander Guy Hecker pitches complete games to win both ends of a doubleheader. The Youngsville, Pennsylvania native does not walk a single batter when he beats the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers at Eclipse Park, 5-4 and 8-2.
  • 1998 The National Baseball Facility of Ireland, considered the main home of the Irish National baseball team, officially opens in Corkagh Demesne Park in Clondalkin, West Dublin when U.S. Ambassador Jean Kennedy throws out the ceremonial first pitch. Dodger owner Peter O’Malley played an instrumental role in the construction of the diamonds now known as the Fields of Dreams, which includes a regulation sized adult field and an international standard Little League field.
  • 2006 Nomar Garciaparra ties the major league record for being hit by a pitch in a game as he is plunked three times by three different Diamondback pitchers in a 10-4 Dodger victory. The LA first baseman is the first National Leaguer to equal the mark, both literally and figuratively, since the 2000 season, when Astros outfielder Richard Hidalgo got thwacked thrice in a game in April.

  1. This is this year’s Dodger team. Got to learn to love them – even though they are going to lose about 20 more games than last year.

    • Well said. Still, this was another painful loss, one of far too many we have suffered this season.

  2. Don’t start me on Roberts’ use of pitchers. Yes, the injuries have been awful, but you have to play with the cards you are dealt. I shudder to think of all the games we’ve lost this year when scoring 6 or more runs.

  3. As someone who has umpired for 21 years, including high school and 30-and-over and 45-and/over baseball, the umpires make mistakes. But so do the coaches (not called managers below the pro levels) and the players.

    • Umps have their own version of the zone and since they are the ump that is the zone and both batters and pitchers need to adjust. He consistently called that pitch a strike against Vargas.

      • Thanks for the explanation. I didn’t watch but followed on my Smartphone.

      • And yet called better pitches balls against our pitchers. That’s what angered me.

        • Certainly seemed that way. Tough for Vargas trying to get out of a slump and being particularly selective so that he might only swing at things he can hit with authority.

  4. Had Phillips ever pitched in three straight games before? Mike Marshall he ain’t.

  5. The downside of the Dodgers using their three best relievers in 5-2 game last night, the first of six games in six days.

  6. I guess no one was up in the pen, but the last thing I would do is leave him in the game.

        • I’ve always disliked his music. He version of Peter Green’s “Black Magic Woman” is pure butchery.

          • Those are just two completely different songs. To say it is butchery suggests that Carlos was trying to outdo Peter. Better he was paying tribute to a song that inspired him and taking it in a different direction. It’s not about Carlos, their version involves contributions from Rollie on vocals and keyboards, the drummer and the percussionists.

  7. Need Jason to get on and then James to drive him home. It’s worked well that way tonight.

  8. This is the longest lineup for the Dodgers in a while. Feeling good about 1-8. And Rojas has hit as well.

  9. Dustin May’s heading for surgery. Hopefully he is recovered in 6 months – and not 12.

  10. Wonder how close the play at the plate would have been if the ball hadn’t been cut off.

  11. Logan Gilbert of the M’s tosses a CGSO against the Gnats. Mutts leading Snakes 8-4 in top of the ninth.

  12. Scherzer’s Mutts have taken a 3-1 lead over the Snakes in the fourth. Going for their fourth straight on the 4th, Gnats trail M’s 2-0 after two.
