RHP Luis L. Ortiz (2-3, 4.11 ERA) pitches for the visiting Pirates and RHP Emmet Sheehan (2-0, 2.65 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers.
- 1884 In American Association action, Louisville right-hander Guy Hecker pitches complete games to win both ends of a doubleheader. The Youngsville, Pennsylvania native does not walk a single batter when he beats the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers at Eclipse Park, 5-4 and 8-2.
- 1998 The National Baseball Facility of Ireland, considered the main home of the Irish National baseball team, officially opens in Corkagh Demesne Park in Clondalkin, West Dublin when U.S. Ambassador Jean Kennedy throws out the ceremonial first pitch. Dodger owner Peter O’Malley played an instrumental role in the construction of the diamonds now known as the Fields of Dreams, which includes a regulation sized adult field and an international standard Little League field.
- 2006 Nomar Garciaparra ties the major league record for being hit by a pitch in a game as he is plunked three times by three different Diamondback pitchers in a 10-4 Dodger victory. The LA first baseman is the first National Leaguer to equal the mark, both literally and figuratively, since the 2000 season, when Astros outfielder Richard Hidalgo got thwacked thrice in a game in April.

NPUT
This is this year’s Dodger team. Got to learn to love them – even though they are going to lose about 20 more games than last year.
Well said. Still, this was another painful loss, one of far too many we have suffered this season.
Don’t start me on Roberts’ use of pitchers. Yes, the injuries have been awful, but you have to play with the cards you are dealt. I shudder to think of all the games we’ve lost this year when scoring 6 or more runs.
Need baserunners. Freddie not helping out with that.
Freddie struggling the last two games. Very uncharacteristic.
Bednar appears to be on the Phlablo Sandoval Phitness Program.
7 walks is tough to overcome.
But here’s hoping.
So, Spicoli gets an assist. A routine 1-6-3.
Muttpen trying to give it away in the ninth, but somehow they hang on.
We blew leads of 4-2, 6-5 and 7-6.
Vargas seems to be with an 0-2 count repeatedly.
He’s been awful but he really got hosed there.
As someone who has umpired for 21 years, including high school and 30-and-over and 45-and/over baseball, the umpires make mistakes. But so do the coaches (not called managers below the pro levels) and the players.
Umps have their own version of the zone and since they are the ump that is the zone and both batters and pitchers need to adjust. He consistently called that pitch a strike against Vargas.
Thanks for the explanation. I didn’t watch but followed on my Smartphone.
And yet called better pitches balls against our pitchers. That’s what angered me.
Certainly seemed that way. Tough for Vargas trying to get out of a slump and being particularly selective so that he might only swing at things he can hit with authority.
Don’t let the game be decided by the ump.
Plus the umpire was really tight with the zone against our pitchers.
Well, rats.
Vargas needs a trip to the Sooner State, the sooner the better.
Ha!
Absurd.
Sure those 2 last calls were bad. But – 7 walks. Too many.
Vargas got a bad strike three call the previous inning as well.
What a terrible way to end it.
Jobbed!
UMP!!!!!
Peralta he ain’t.
UMP!!!
JD… and then Vargas. So kinda up to JD.
The guy I would want up.
Ha! Though I was thinking dinger.
Rats. Missed it.
Max keeps it going. Let’s go JD.
Had Phillips ever pitched in three straight games before? Mike Marshall he ain’t.
Let’s go.
The downside of the Dodgers using their three best relievers in 5-2 game last night, the first of six games in six days.
You kinda called that.
Last chance saloon.
Now they’ll have to face the Bucs’ best reliever.
Just like the Pirates just did.
They shoulda walked him tio pitch to Hedges instead.
Agree as well.
Still leaving him in.
Ok. Get someone up in the pen please.
Terrible pitch there on an 0-2 count.
I guess no one was up in the pen, but the last thing I would do is leave him in the game.
Agree.
And then that. Normally leave him in, but not with his third night in a row out there.
Drat
¡Miércoles!
Yikes
Arghhhh!
Too many walks tonight.

Phillips not totally sharp.
Tired, maybe.
Doc rolled the dice on a third straight outing from EP. So far – it’s more like, no dice.
DP please
Oye como va? Grab some pine!
I prefer the ballplayer to the musician.
He made some great contributions to music, but that was some time ago.
I’ve always disliked his music. He version of Peter Green’s “Black Magic Woman” is pure butchery.
Those are just two completely different songs. To say it is butchery suggests that Carlos was trying to outdo Peter. Better he was paying tribute to a song that inspired him and taking it in a different direction. It’s not about Carlos, their version involves contributions from Rollie on vocals and keyboards, the drummer and the percussionists.
Rollie is equally awful.
OK, future people, get to work!
Nice try Max.
On to the ninth.
EP maybe for the ninth.
DeLuca looks like an 70s ballplayer.
Some say he looks like Cey. If I squint I can see it.
I knew Ron in high school (though he went to another school), and I immediately thought of him.
I knew Ron in high school (though he went to another school), and I immediately thought of him.
Let’s say a 70s stache and an 80s mullet.
Cameraman made a nice catch.
First HR in his major league career!
Let’s go JDL!!
Here comes Johnny!!
Joe Davis calls the Deluca dinger!
DeLuca!!!!
Argh.
Let’s go Muncy, clap clap, clapclapclap.
Beautiful
About time…
Freddie fighting it a bit tonight.
Come on Outie. Make us all recall Trayce Thompson.
Striking out was not what I meant. The correct answer was 3 hr game.
Good show Gavin!
Nice work.
Perfect pitch by Stone to get the k.
About time blue called one right.
To quote RBI from an hour ago: “Tie game, need a DP.”
The Busted Poseur rule sucks.
Stone got cheated on an obvious strike three before that hit.
Stone unlucky on that hit.
Need Jason to get on and then James to drive him home. It’s worked well that way tonight.
Bit of a seesaw.
May we have a big inning, please?
Another one you mean.
Or is 3 not a big inning?
Here comes Stone.
Pirates in red caps is different looking.
Freddie. Freddie. Freddie.
This is the longest lineup for the Dodgers in a while. Feeling good about 1-8. And Rojas has hit as well.
Hitters gonna hit.
Outie!!! Another one!
Hedges is one of baseball’s worst hitters, shouldn’t even get a sac fly.
Tie game. Need a DP.
Sheehan hasn’t got it tonight. Sigh.
He’s regressing to the first.
Might be seeing Stone in here before too long.
Another near miss there by Peralta.
JD just missed that one.
Dodger hitters getting some good at bats tonight.
Sheehan has found the zone.
He’s on auto-correct.
MOOKIE!!!
Mooookie!!
Outie! Hits it out!!!
Dustin May’s heading for surgery. Hopefully he is recovered in 6 months – and not 12.
Ugh.
Agree but cannot like. At least the uncertainty is gone for this season.
Nice quick inning by Sheehan
Okay Sheehan. Let’s have a six pitch inning.
Wonder how close the play at the plate would have been if the ball hadn’t been cut off.
Nice work Freddie.
Mookie gets it going.
Sheehan’s not close on most of these pitches.
Happy No Monarch Day to my friends south of the border.

Logan Gilbert of the M’s tosses a CGSO against the Gnats. Mutts leading Snakes 8-4 in top of the ninth.
Scherzer’s Mutts have taken a 3-1 lead over the Snakes in the fourth. Going for their fourth straight on the 4th, Gnats trail M’s 2-0 after two.
