It’s still hot

Gershwin-Heyward-Gershwin probably doesn’t appear on as many records as Holland-Dozier-Holland, but they wrote a killer opera and libretto called Porgy and Bess in 1934. Fast forward to 1968, when a somewhat blowsy 25-year-old blues singer from Texas recorded one of the trio’s strongest songs from that production. The result was this:

I’ve always loved the quiet guitar intro to this. It’s unclear to me whether that’s Sam Andrew (who was usually the lead player for Big Brother and the Holding Company) or James Gurley (who was widely known for his flashy playing).
