Ronstadt and McPartland, oh my

In case you don’t know, Marian McPartland is a legendary pianist who’s had a public radio show called Piano Jazz for decades. Today’s episode was a repeat of one from 2005, and who should be the guest but Linda Ronstadt singing songs from the Great American Songbook.

Listen here.

Here’s the set list:

“Just Tell Him I Said Hello” (Canning, Hegner)
“I Fall In Love Too Easily” (Cahn, Styne)
“Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry” (Cahn, Styne)
“Someone to Watch Over Me” (G. and I. Gershwin)
“Get Out of Town” (C. Porter)
“Lush Life” (Strayhorn)
“What’ll I Do?” (Berlin)
“Miss Otis Regrets” (C. Porter)
“Portrait of Linda Ronstadt” (McPartland)

  1. I met Marian many years ago, after one of her concerts. I was with my cousin, who’s father (my great-uncle) played music with (and apparently was friends with) Marian. I stuttered my way through a greeting, but the low point was me shaking her hand overly vigorously. She was already old, her hands a bit boney, and I threatened to break them in order to show her some love. Great way to impress a pianist.

  2. Neat show, Steve. And now I’m all jealous that my sister got to meet Marian AND hang out with our cousin Adam, who has since passed away.

  3. Steve, we used to get Marian’s show on our local NPR station and I really enjoyed it. And Jill, my doctor does the same thing to me when he shakes my poor arthritic hand at the beginning of each visit. He really should know better. Maybe I’ll fall to my knees the next time he does that, to see if he’ll catch on then.

  4. Love that show, but no longer on our NPR station anymore. (Ms, McPartland hasn’t produced any new shows in some time and they decided to do a re-run of Wait Wait instead). But I need to listen to hear how they did Lush Life, one of my most favorite tunes ever.

  5. Shelley, I was with Alison not Adam, and we were at some small concert venue on the North Shore. Maybe Beverly?
