Santorum: States Should Have The Right To Outlaw Birth Control

Of course they should. However, if they tried, they’d make Wisconsin’s pro-public employee demonstrations last spring look like the crowds attending high school basketball games in 200-seat gyms, but what the heck.

What I really don’t understand about people like Santorum and conservatives in general is how they can reconcile their “get government out of the bedroom” mantra when talking about abortion with this kind of call to put government directly into the bedroom. This goes well beyond cognitive dissonance, which implies some discomfort with one’s conflicting views. It’s firmly into irrationality.

  1. Oh, it’s quite rational; it’s just that the slogan is always quoted incompletely. It should read, “get government out of my bedroom.” And there’s a corollary: “My bedroom is none of your business, but my business is being in your bedroom.”
