  • 1999 A crowd of 37,317 fans enjoys a 3-2 victory over the Braves when LA surpasses the 100 million mark in attendance at Dodger Stadium. The ballpark opened in 1962, four seasons after the franchise moved from Brooklyn to the west coast.
  • 2011 Bud Selig announces MLB is taking over operations of the Dodgers because of concerns over team finances and the ability of Frank McCourt to run the franchise. Los Angeles is facing substantial debt payments, which the owner plans to meet by using funding from the club’s new $2.5 billion, 20-year media-rights deal with Fox Sports, but the Commissioner has withheld his approval of the agreement between the News Corp.’s media company and the team.
  • 2012 The Reds become the fifth major league team to record their 10,000th franchise victory with a 9-4 win over Chicago at Wrigley Field. Cincinnati joins the Giants, Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Braves in reaching the milestone.

  • 1939 In front of 2,457 fans at Braves Field, the Dodgers, with Whit Wyatt pitching the first 16 frames, and Boston plays 23 innings in a game that ends in a 2-2 tie when plate umpire Babe Pinelli called the five-hour and 15-minute contest at 8:15 pm due to darkness. The same teams at the same field played 26 innings to a 1-1 tie in 1920.
  • 1940 To honor the lyricist of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, the Dodgers celebrate Jack Norworth Day at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field. The songwriter and his partner Albert Von Tilzer, who wrote the music, had never seen a game when they created the song in 1908.

  • 1980 Dodger southpaw Jerry Reuss, facing only 28 batters, no-hits the Giants at Candlestick Park, 8-0. Shortstop Bill Russell’s errant throw on Jack Clark’s grounder with two outs in the first inning deprives the 31 year-old left-hander from tossing a perfect game.
  • 2011 Citing MLB refusal to sign off on a transaction that would provide the team with $385 million, the Dodgers file for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court. Although there will be no disruption to the day-to-day status of the franchise, the Chapter 11 financing permits the Dodgers to use $150 million for daily operations and gives owner Frank McCourt time to seek a media deal that will ensure the club’s long-term financial stability.

The Phillies hand RHP Taijuan Walker (2-1, 4.97 ERA) the ball to start the series, while the Dodgers give theirs to RHP Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who’ll be making just his second start of the season. He went 3 1/3 innings in his first.

  • 1906 At Brooklyn’s Washington Park, Philadelphia southpaw John Lush strikes out 11 batters en route to throwing a 6-0 no-hitter against the Superbas, a team that will become known as the Dodgers in 1911. There will not be another no-hitter by a Phillies pitcher until Jim Bunning’s perfect game against the Mets in 1964.
  • 1920 The longest game ever played ends after 26 innings in a 1-1 tie, with Brooklyn Robin right-hander Leon Cadore and the Braves hurler Joe Oeschger, also right-handed, both go the distance for their respective clubs. Boston third baseman Charlie Pick establishes the major league record for hitless at-bats in one game, going 0-for-11 in the marathon.
  • 1965 Tommy Davis, trying to break up a double play, dislocates and breaks his ankle sliding into second base in the fourth inning of the team’s 4-2 victory over the Giants at Dodger Stadium. The two-time National League batting champ will not play again this year until he appears as a pinch-hitter in the season finale.
  • 1972 Philadelphia starter Dick Selma goes the distance, three-hitting the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine, 2-1. The victory is the fifth consecutive complete-game thrown by a Phillies starter, with Steve Carlton, Woody Fryman, Barry Lersch, and Bill Champion each finishing their game without help from the bullpen in team’s previous four contests.
  • 1974 Tom Seaver strikes out 16 Dodgers, giving up only three hits in twelve innings of work, but gets a no-decision when the Mets lose the Chavez Ravine contest in 14 innings, 2-1. Steve Garvey strokes a walk-off single to center field off Harry Parker, scoring Billy Buckner with the winning run.
  • 2000 The Braves establish a franchise-record 14th straight victory, with a 2-1 win at Dodger Stadium. Quilvio Veras’ third-inning homer proves to be the difference.
  • 2009 With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Duaner Sanchez walks Russell Martin, who checks his swing on a full count with the bases loaded, bringing home the winning run in L.A.’s 1-0 triumph over the Padres. The win keeps the Dodgers undefeated at home, extending their record at Chavez Ravine to 8-0 with their ‘walk-off’ victory.
  • 2012 With the final payment received on the record $2.15-billion purchase price, Frank McCourt’s turbulent era of the Dodger ownership comes to an end. The team’s new ownership group, fronted by Magic Johnson and incoming club president Stan Kasten, includes Mark Walter, chief executive of the Chicago-based Guggenheim Financial, who arranged the financing and holds a controlling interest in the franchise.

The Dodgers send LHP Tyler Anderson (8-0, 3.00 ERA) out to face the team he began his career with back in 2016. He’ll face the Rockies’ RHP Chad Kuhl (4-5, 3.95 ERA). When a pitcher is undefeated in the last week of June with an ERA of 3.00 there are few superlatives left to use about his performance. Kuhl had one bad inning in his last start but retired the last seven batters he faced, prompting praise from his manager.

The Braves give the ball to RHP Charlie Morton (1-1, 6.10 ERA) while the Dodgers hand theirs to RHP Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 1.29 ERA). Morton beat the Reds in his first start and lost to San Diego in his second. His longest outing was his second at 5 1/3 innings. Gonsolin has made two starts and gone three innings against the Rockies and four against the Reds.

I apologize for not getting a post up for yesterday’s game; I was SURE Monday was an off day. Sorry!

Dodgers at Mariners, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), ROOTNW, SPNLA

LHP Julio Urias (2-0, 3.86 ERA) goes for the visiting Dodgers. He’ll face LHP Marco Gonzalez, (1-1, 8.22 ERA). Urias wants to get back to the height he achieved in his first game this year when he went seven innings giving up just one run on three hits; in his last two starts he’s given up eight runs over 11 2/3 innings. Gonzalez’s first two starts were awful: he gave up twelve runs in 10 1/3 innings. In his last start he gave up just two runs in five innings.

RHP Walker Buehler (8-1, 2.96 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers, undoubtedly with an extra spring in his step after his alma mater’s College World Series win yesterday. He’ll face the Rockies’ RHP Peter Lambert (2-0, 5.85 ERA). Buehler is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA against the Rockies this season while Lambert got a no-decision in his one start against the Dodgers June 22 when he gave up three earned runs in five innings.
