Game 125, 2021

Mets at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: SNY, SPNLA

RHP Marcus Stroman (8-12, 2.84 ERA) pitches for the Mets in the final game of the series. He’ll face the Dodgers’ David Price (4-1, 3.62 ERA).

On this day in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1917 In a 22-inning contest against the Dodgers, Pirates’ outfielder Carson Bigbee sets a major-league record with 11 at-bats. The game was also the fourth straight extra-inning game played by Pittsburgh (total of 59 innings), which sets a National League record.
  • 1965 Juan Marichal thinks Johnny Roseboro throws too close to his head returning the ball to Sandy Koufax and attacks the Dodger catcher with his bat. The Los Angeles backstop suffers cuts on the head during the 14-minute brawl.
  • 2000 Hitting a solo blast and a three-run round-tripper during a nine-run sixth inning of a 14-6 victory over the Expos, Dodger first baseman Eric Karros becomes the first player in the 111-year franchise history to hit two homers in an inning.

In 1886 Louisville’s Chicken Wolf hits a game-winning inside-the-park home run, thanks to a stray dog impeding Abner Powell from fielding the ball. The canine, who had been sleeping by the fence, refuses to let go of the pant leg of the Reds center fielder, who watches in dismay as the Colonel batter races around the bases in the team’s 5-4 loss at Eclipse Park.

  1. Stroman tried a soccer move on that foul ball, but wasn’t able to flip it in the air.

  2. I always thought Marichal should’ve been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on Roseboro. There were witnesses.

      • That’s a pretty steep fine relative to salaries in those days. Juan was making $60k at the time. A pitcher of his stature these days might be in the $30 million range. The equivalent fine would be close to $1 million.

  3. The only positive I can see is if the Mets are all fired up now and so will beat the gnats three in a row!

  4. Oh well. I guess we were due for a stinker. Thoroughly disappointing effort today.

  5. Familia in his third game of the series, so he should be by now for Dodger batters.

    • Agree but cannot like. Meanwhile, Donovan Solano’s BALCO Flaxseed Oil shipment arrived in Oakland.

  6. Old friend Frankie Montás is throwing a beauty against the Gnats, but with a high pitch count. Probably done after seven.

  7. Stroman usually doesn’t break the 90s pitch count, except for his last game when he was Strongman and threw 114.

  8. I’m surprised that they didn’t pinch-hit there, particularly with an off-day tomorrow.

  9. In Houston, in the bottom of the tenth, Asterisks loaded bases with nobody out. Seattle’s Paul Sewald then struck out the side to send it to the 11th.
