Diamondbacks at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: BS Arizona, SPNLA
In the final game of the home stand RHP Zach Davies (2-1, 3.57 ERA) takes the ball for the D-Backs and RHP Walker Buehler (4-1, 2.81 ERA) does the same for the Dodgers.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1929 In the doubleheader played at Philadelphia’s Baker Bowl, the teams combine to score a record fifty runs when the Dodgers outlast the Phillies, 20-16, before dropping the nightcap to the home team 8-6. In the opener, Brooklyn’s Johnny Frederick crosses the plate five times, giving him the major league mark of scoring eight runs in two consecutive games.
- 1931 Dodgers’ outfielder Babe Herman hits for the cycle for the first of two times this season. In 1933, as a member of the Cubs, he will again hit for the cycle, making him and Bob Meusel the only major leaguers to have accomplished the feat three times since 1900.
- 1942 Night games in New York are banned for the duration of WW II, leaving fans in the dark about the status of the All-Star Game scheduled to be played at the Polo Grounds on the evening of Monday, July 6. The prohibition of nighttime tilts, announced by NYC Police Commissioner Lewis J. Valentine, will change the starting times for 28 contests involving the Dodgers and Giants. (The first night game at Yankee Stadium will be played in 1946.)
- 1998 With a 6-3 victory over the Orioles, the Devil Rays become only the second expansion team in major league history to sweep an away four-game series. The 1993 Colorado Rockies, who did it against the Dodgers, is the other team to accomplish this feat.
Another historical note: In 2004 At the age of 40, southpaw Randy Johnson becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a perfect game when the Diamondbacks beat the Braves, 2-0. The ‘Big Unit’ joins Cy Young, Jim Bunning, Hideo Nomo, and Nolan Ryan as the only hurlers to throw no-hitters in both leagues and creates the longest time span between no-no’s, having first accomplished the feat against the Tigers in June of 1990.

Fillies folded for the Friars today, so Dodgers lose half a game off their lead.
NPUT
Huh?
I thought we were playing today.
Never mind. New post scheduled for tomorrow.

Icing on the cake – at the end of the game, Dino Ebell tossed me a game ball – for cheering my butt off I suspect!

I haven’t been to a whole lot of games in person in my life other than about 40 one season in Hawai’i, but that’s never happened to me. Not once have I gotten a game ball. I envy you!
It was surreal. Seriously, Link, I almost cried! Hard to explain, but I’ve been having a little bit of a rough time with some family stuff and this was just so uplifting. And I adore Dino – his irrepressible energy. A special day for sure.
That was presumably the Hawai’i Islanders in the PCL? In Tacoma, in 1963, I saw the legendary Bo Belinsky pitch for them.
Yeah, back in 1978. Belinsky was long gone, obviously.
Too cool. Good for you.
I try to sit as close as I can to the players. Prices being what they are that usually means by the pen. Had some great interactions last year with El Mariachi. Other years with Petey and Kuo.
Gonzo once threw us a ball because we were cheering so loudly for the team in Nationals Stadium. Had the same emotional reaction.
The Boys are on their way back East. Looking forward to seeing them in DC!
Well, at least CWalker didn’t hurt us.
Ferris not at his sharpest again today.

Woo-HOO!!!
Meanwhile, in Filadelfia, the Fils have taken a 1-0 lead v. a shaky Blake Snell (first outing of the year).
Made short work of them.
SWEEP!!!!
Walker lurking.
Who you gunna call?
Son of Hud it appears.
This guy’s kid could be the right choice. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5c4f17d1cd778130d81e1399c04520683b2be29c613063c645dd88397c70b757.png
Maybe Price will prove useful..
The Price is right…
Eric notes that he is the 15th pitcher used by the Dodgers in the past 45 hours
He looked very relaxed and sharp.
Up until May 4, Varsho was purely in CF. Since then exclusively at catcher, apart from occasional DH.
I am right in the field by the Dodgers batter’s box. SO AMAZING!!!!
Grab a bat!
I’m old enough to remember paying $3.50 for a box seat.
Mine were free. Hate to think what they actually cost.
Get us a win girl..
One more Brusdar.
Well adios. Let’s go Price.
Yes!
Brewster’s a bit erratic.
Danger!
Ian Kennedy last pitched for the Snakes more than a decade ago.
Walker hasn’t gotten those sorts of calls, Willie says under his breath.
I have come to the conclusion that the umps will make 5 to 9 bad calls per game. From watching the games and perusing the umpire report cards that seems to be the norm. Just gotta hope it all evens out.
MLB gives them a couple of inches leeway I understand, which seems fair for calls in the “heat of the battle”so to speak. Evaluation should weigh how far off though, so as to highlight the egregious.
Angel Hernandez gets a foot.
Needs a well placed one IMO.
LOL
Gnats go quietly in the ninth, and lose 5-3.
Woot…
Phew!
Gutty
Whew. Nice job Walker.
Meanwhile, we have some undesirable arrivals in the area. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/geese-terrorize-Bay-Area-city-17181930.php
Minimize the damage Walker.
Rox have now taken a 5-3 lead over the Gnats in the bottom of the eighth.
Woot..
In the eighth at Coors, the Rox have tied it up against the Gnats.
Good inning.
Dodgers put up a square number.
Luxor…
JT is a beast with runners on.
Currently leading NL in RBI.
Ginger Bread….
Buehler not sharp today.
Counting his two strikeouts in his first two ABs today, Joey Bart, catcher for the Giants, has now fanned 36 times in 67 at bats. That’s a higher strikeout percentage than Sandy Koufax, who was a very poor batter but not a bad pitcher.
That’s a .537 percentage, which should buy him a ticket back to Sacto.
I remember watching on TV when Koufax homered off Warren Spahn in Milwaukee.
The Dodgers are 24-12 and have already used 26 pitchers this year, including Alberto. Anderson, Buehler, Gonsolin and Kershaw have won four games each. The other 22 pitchers have combined to win eight games.
Hudson and Urias have each lost three games. The other 24 pitchers have combined to lose six games.
Not being behind is uncharted territory.
Makes it harder to mount a comeback.
Back in familiar territory
Time to consult the road map out.
Shortcut through Dingerville.
Ha!
Hey Walker, pitch around Walker.
Hope we get the Walker (Johnny) Blue Label today.
