Diamondbacks at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: FS-A, SPNLA
RHP Taylor Clarke (2-3, 6.10 ERA) goes for the D-Backs and RHP Ross Stripling (3-2, 3.08 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. Clarke has started twice against the Dodgers this season and each has been nearly identical: three runs on four hits in five innings on June 4 and two runs on three hits on June 26. This will be Stripling’s eighth start of the year, but only his second in two months. The most recent was June 25 against these same Diamondbacks; he gave up two runs on four hits in three innings.
Take yourself back to 1959, when the Giants and Dodgers were recently arrived in California and the LA games were played at the Coliseum. In May there was an important series between the two, and a disputed foul/fair ball caused a 15-minute rhubarb, here called beautifully by, who else, Vin Scully.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1962 Johnny Podres ties a major league mark record, striking out eight consecutive batters in LA’s 5-1 victory over Philadelphia. The 29 year-old southpaw’s streak begins with the third out in the top of the fourth frame and ends after the first out in the seventh inning of the Dodger Stadium contest.
- 1995 Dodger right-hander Hideo Nomo, who is leading the National League in strikeouts, becomes the first player from Japan to be selected for the major league All-Star game. As the starter for the Senior Circuit, the 26 year-old rookie tosses two scoreless innings in the National League’s 3-2 victory over their American League rivals at The Ballpark in Arlington.
Lineup when available.

New pitcher! From True Blue LA:
“The Dodgers made a deal with the Rays, trading right-handed pitcher Nathan Witt for another right hander in Casey Sadler.” “This season, Sadler had a 1.86 ERA in 19 1⁄3 innings pitched in the majors and a 2.76 ERA in 32 2⁄3 innings in the minors.”
To make room on the 40-man, they put Rich Hill on the 60 day IL, which means he won’t be back until at least August 19th. That’s not good news.
And the 40 man roster just got a bit better, a bit deeper.
NPUT
Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles . . .
Excuse the hyperbole.
You said it. There was hope. And behold.
Beaty drew a walk!
Turner must be hurting not to bat instead of Martin
Undoubtedly.
His elbow looks pretty swollen.
Tonight’s game is MLBTV’s free game of the day.
In the course of those five walks, the Dodgers hit five foul balls.
It was reminiscent of Hooton’s meltdown in a playoff game vs..the Phillies in the late 1970s.
I would love to have heard Vinnie call the bottom of the 9th.
So true.
Would you believe it?…
That’s probably exactly what he would have said.
He said it a few times over the years
Sure did, and it always was appropriate.
Dodgers now lead Rox by 13, Snakes and Pads by 15, Gnats by 19. Best NL record by 7-1/2 over Barves, best major league record by two over Yanquis (teams are even in loss column, however – Dodgers have four more wins).
You’re kidding me. Down a run, two out, no one on, and they win without benefit of a hit?
Didn’t even put a ball in play.
I guess you don’t have to hit them where they ain’t, or even hit them at all.
We had ’em all the way.
Dodgers win! A walk in the park.
Good one.
Is this our new 4+1 game?
Crazy
Truly bizarre.
That counts, too, Cody.
The most bizarre win ever?
Completely nuts.
Oh my goodness. Woo-HOO?!?!?!?!
Two outs, bases empty, 0-2 on Taylor, and we get four straight walks!
five!
A high five!
Holland almost in tears.
The Crying Dutchman?
alright Cody, 5-4 is just as good as 8-4
Holland has become Joe Kelly.
More like walk-in!!
that’ll do
What the heck happened to him? Any ideas?
I’m actually feeling sorry for Holland.
That shot of him where you could see his hands shaking got to me a bit too.
I guess I’m glad I didn’t have a TV tonight.
The Mets continue to find new ways to not only shoot themselves in the foot, but also reload and fire again. This past weekend was their celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ’69 Miracle Mets. It was a somewhat somber occasion because Tom Seaver couldn’t attend, but it was made more so when they read off the list the members of the team that had passed away since ’69. Problem was, the deaths of two of them, Jim Gosger and Jesse Hudson, turned out to be greatly exaggerated. The Mets later apologized, spelling Jesse’s first name “Jessie” in the process.
Somebody on Facebook suggested the Mets were the most poorly-managed team in all of pro sports. I demurred and nominated the Knicks.
They beat the Yanquis tonight, though, ensuring that the Dodgers will continue to have baseball’s best record.
Very weird ninth.
keep the bat on your shoulder
At least until you get one strike.
Where there’s life, there’s hope.
I believe. Help my unbelief.
Wow, they are making us look foolish at the plate.
Frustration for Max.
After hitting three homers in two games, Max has now struck out six times in three games.
This may be our last best shot.
and there it goes
Dodgers are missing Freese.
And Seager. And possibly Pollock.
Freese would’ve been ideal for that situation.
Yes, he would have been. I don’t think he would have struck out.
Do you know when he is due back?
This weekend, I believe.
Six, so far.
How many sliders in a row?
That was an unproductive out by Garlick that we couldn’t afford there.
Garlick very outpitched there.
CT3 made it despite a stumble.
Hope we don’t waste it.
But unfortunately we did.
Putting the 3 in CT3!!!
Bring him in, Joc.
Nice work from Petey.
He’s been solid.
Need to hold them at 4-3 and then find a way to score at least another run or two.
The bespectacled Kelly, who looks like he should be teaching high school physics, now has an ERA below 6 for the first time this season.
Rox have lost to the Minute Maids so, at worst, Dodgers will retain 12-game lead.
The Giants’ lead of 7-1 over the Padres is now in the 6th inning. WBBsAs’ favorite third baseman has hit two two-run homers.
I prefer Eva to Evan, but neither means much to me.
Braun over Longoria?
Huh?
I knew who you were talking about.
Peron, probably.
So – are we all thinking walk-off by Rios later tonight – or is that rookie routine so last June?
I like it.
Joe Kelly. You baffle me sometimes.
Sometimes the Dodgers are their own worst opponent.
As Vin Scully used to say, quoting Pogo, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
The Rockies lost to the Astros, 9-8, tonight in Denver. The Giants are leading the Padres, 7-1, in San Diego.
Stripling has raised his batting average of .091 to .231 tonight while his ERA has gone from 3.08 to 3.34 Here’s hoping that he finishes tonight with a higher batting average than ERA, but that would be a stretch.
¡Quique!
My thinking of that Cody at bat: BELLinger. Just missed ANOTHER extra base hit.
This off-season, Joc should work on playing first and switch hitting.
Bellinger’s not getting any lift lately.
Unlike Amed
I have a feeling that Bellinger is going to have a big game tonight.
Next time, I will keep my feelings to myself, at least for the first at bat. But he did hit it hard. How many shots has he hit to first base lately?

I suppose Rios is starting due to Turner being struck by a pitch yesterday. I have read that Rios is a little iffy on the fielding side of his game.
I have noticed how many starting pitchers that the Dodgers face have very high ERAs, including tonight’s. Of our starters, Maeda has the highest ERA at 3.78.
As a team the Dodgers’ pitching is second only to Tampa Bay in ERA.
Thanks for that . . . Until Kershaw lost on Saturday, only one starting pitcher for the Dodgers had lost more than one game, and that was Maeda with four.
The average ERA in the NL is 4.41, so yeah.
Link: Thanks for that great link from 1959 of the Roy Campanella Benefit Game and the disputed call on the Dodgers-Giants game. The announcer says the game was on May 30, 1959. I checked the schedule for that year: the Dodgers played the Cardinals that day at the Coliseum. If any of you can track down the actual date, let me know. I wanted to review the box score.
Looks like it is the June 30 game.
June 30, 1959. Giants won 2 – 0. Sudden Sam Jones beat Big D Don Drysdale.
Campanella benefit game between Dodgers and Yankees: May 7, 1959.
My father took me to that game. I remember the pre-game ceremonies with the lighting of candles and cigarette lighters, Pee Wee Reese wheeling Campanella out, and Ryne Duren hitting Carl Furillo in the ribs and, I think, breaking one or more ribs. Have no recollection of who won the game. I still have the multi-colored ticket.
You’re welcome.
Came across this in a window display in Italy. And actually saw a guy on the street wearing one. Almost all mlb caps you see here are Yanks, despite Lasorda, given DiMaggio, Berra and Torre and the large number of Italian immigrants that populated NYC area beginning in the early 1900’s
Oops, having trouble downloading pic.
…well, is was a photo of LA Dodgers cap.
Try dragging the photo into your post.
