Cardinals at Dodgers, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: ESPN
LHP Steven Matz (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the hill for the Cardinals and RHP Gavin Stone (0-0, 0.00 ERA) does so for the Dodgers.
- 1948 At Ebbets Field No. 2, the Dodgers play their first exhibition game at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, which will remain the team’s home for 61 years. Amidst much fanfare, including Governor Millard Caldwell throwing the ceremonial first pitch, Jackie Robinson homers in the first inning as Brooklyn beats its top farm club, the Montreal Royals, 5-4.
- 2018 Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who goes 3-for-4 in the team’s 3-2 victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field, becomes the first American Leaguer to have multiple extra-base hits in the first three games of the season. In 2015, Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez also accomplished the feat, collecting at least two hits in each of LA’s first three contests when he compiled ten hits his first 14 at-bats of the season.

Yay!! Dodgers win!!
Munster shot!
Mildred dwarfed!
Well, Stone pitching well. 78 pitches thru 5. Does he get the 6th? Offense needs to wake up.
A bit. There was a joke about a former Fillies pitcher – “Boozer was fine until he reached the bottom of the fifth.”
He was one of only four pitchers ever to be ejected for throwing a spitter.
Dodgers are blacked out on ESPN, but in Tacoma this is not Buehler’s day off. That game started on MLBTV at 1:35 pm.
With ESPN tonight and then the Gnats for three straight, this is officially Blackout Week.
In the same boat today blackout-wise.
Late to the party – but I was having Easter dinner with my extended family. We were uh – commemorating a different amazing comeback that happened a while ago.
We watched the documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xJ71WTAJaE
The Phoenix Dodgers!
Dodgers down late in the game, risen to win.
Another Hudson reincarnation. Just when you think he is done and out of baseball.
Woo-HOO!!!
OK, future people, get to work!
Arenado hasn’t had a good start to his season. Please don’t start now.
Down goes Goldschmidt.
You can say that again
Down goes Goldschmidt. LOL
I guess Phillips isn’t available.
Hard enough to hit without the umps helping the pitcher.
Let’s have a quiet ninth, OK?
Ball 6, but somehow a K.
Teo and Mooks.
I recall at least two.
Ump! Really?
Lux got jobbed.
Doubly.
Was that the first multi-run home run of the year for the Dodgers?
Well, now the pitch box is back on.
Max lights up the blog
Yippee!
Maxi!
Wah-Ooh. A Muncy Mash.
MAX!!!!
I’m late joining in so a belated Happy Easter
3 CT3 BB is a month’s worth for him.
CT3BB
Yes! Teoscar!
Teoscar again!
¡Teoscar!
Interesting that ESPN doesn’t have the pitch box on. Umpire union must have complained.
Interesting that ESPN still doesn’t condescend to let us see replays online.
Well, down two much better than down four. Keep the
Cardinals here, bullpen.
Alright, got the runner in. Any contact is better than a SO.
Okay, Luxxy.
Gameday field view is kind enough to show all the infielders gathering around the mound when there is a visit.
Something brewing…
Alright. There’s one.
Yesterday and today have produced enough weird plays at the expense of the Dodgers to last a season.
No kidding.
We better start looking for a better option than Vesia.
We’d better start scoring.
And shopping for a lefty.
Another very weird inning. Another catcher-interference-induced run.
Good grief.
WTF?
I am struck by the 1948 date for spring training in Vero Beach. In 1947 they trained in Havana, Cuba, not wishing to expose Jackie to hostile crowds. In 1948 it was in Cuidad Trujillo, Dominican Republic, where my mother-in-law hobnobbed with the team. I have photos of her on the field standing between players that I believe are Preacher Roe and Arky Vaughan and partying with Leo Durocher and his wife. Guessing that on their way north they passed through Vero Beach and also played some games there. The season didn’t start until April 20.
In the mid 1960s they left Spring Training in Florida and played a two-game exhibition series with the Senators, I suppose at Griffith Park. Koufax was supposed to pitch Saturday and Drysdale Sunday, and my father kept me home on Saturday to mow the lawn. I was furious. It turned out that Alston flipped his starters, so Don pitched Saturday and Sandy on Sunday. I rode the bus in to see him and the rest of the team pitch.
Where were you living that you had to take the bus in?
When I lived in the District in 1990, I saw an exhibition at RFK between the Orioles and the Redbirds – despite morning snowfall. Later I managed to see a game at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, and loved the approach through historically black neighborhoods with folks socializing on their porches and sidewalks.
Annandale, 10 miles or so outside DC. I didn’t have my driver’s license until the fall after Koufax’s retirement.

Joey Bart DFA’d by Giants.

Redundant
Even for the Gnats he was redundant.
