Game 134, 2023

Braves at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports SE, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

The Braves’ LHP Max Fried (5-1, 2.85 ERA) takes on the Dodgers’ LHP Julio Urías (11-7, 4.41 ERA) in Game Two of a four-game series at Dodger Stadium. Friod spent three months on the IL with a forearm strain, only being activated on August 4.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1890 On Labor Day at Brooklyn’s Washington Park, the Bridegrooms, later to be known as the Dodgers, win all three games against Pittsburgh in the first tripleheader ever played. The home team sweeps the visiting Alleghenys, who will be renamed the Pirates next season, 10-9, 3-2, and 8-4.
  • 1953 The Cardinals tie a major league mark, hitting five homers in a 12-5 loss to Brooklyn at Ebbets Field. The solo shots hit by Stan Musial, Harry Elliot, Rip Repulski, and Steve Bilko (2), all off starter Preacher Roe, aren’t enough to offset the Dodgers’ 17-hit attack, which includes six doubles but no round-trippers.
  • 1969 At Dodger Stadium, Willie Davis ties the franchise record by hitting in 29 consecutive games with his second-inning single in LA’s 10-6 victory over New York. The mark was established by Zack Wheat in 1916.

Lineups when available.

  1. We are missing Martinez. Rosario batting cleanup doesn’t thrill me, but we don’t have many options….Despite the loss, that was an entertaining game last night. These Dodgers never give up. It was good that the Braves had to use their closer, Iglesias, and another key leverage reliever, Minter, in a game that they had led 7-1. As for Mookie, has anyone ever had a better month in Dodgers’ history?…I expect that Urias will be on his game tonight.

    • I am thrilled that AF was able to get Rosario. He is not here to replace JD, but is great that he can fill in against a lefty with JD down. As a Dodger he has actually has OPS+122 against lefties compared to JD at 107.

    • Martinez has been a big offensive force in the Dodger lineup and yet they keep scoring at the same pace without him, or so it would seem to me.

  2. Gnats lose to Pads, fall into a mild card tie with Snakes. They also lose half a game to the Reds.

  3. Trying to imagine this Dodger line up if it had this years versions of Bellinger and Seager.

  4. If the Dodgers hadn’t given up all those runs earlier, they would be right there with the Braves.

  5. This series so far doesn’t make me feel over-confident about the Dodgers end results in the playoffs…

      • Very good Aug. And I would be fine if he did the alternate thing if it means bad Sept and good Oct.

          • Gave up a couple of solo dingers through five innings, but was pretty sharp. Fly ball out anywhere other than Fenway was a three run homer and an otherwise harmless ground ball scored another accounted for four runs in the sixth. Nothing like tonight, where he stunk.

  6. Im a bit surprised by the call ups being Sheehan and Wong. Thought for sure Vargas would be the position player.

    • Wong, 32 year old veteran and two time gold glover was OPSing over 1.000 in the 5 games with the Dodgers minor league teams, so there is that.

    • OKC has much of September to still play. Guess they think better for his development to keep playing rather than sitting on the bench in the Bigs. Can always come up later.

  7. Joe called the hitters coming up this inning for the Dodgers “the heart of the order”. Despite this being the traditional definition, it doesn’t work for this team since the 1 and 2 hitters are the definite heart of the order.

  8. August is to be renamed Mookie. For the month, Betts led the MLB in AVG, HR, XBH, OPS, Runs and Total Bases.
