Game 122, 2023

Marlins at Dodgers, 12:00 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Florida, SPNLA

RHP Eury Pérez (5-4, 3.19 ERA) pitches for the Marlins, facing LHP Caleb Ferguson (7-3, 2.38) of the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1955 For the sixth consecutive season, Robin Roberts is a 20-game winner. The Phillies right-hander, who will finish the season with a 23-14 record, beats Don Newcombe and the first place Dodgers at Connie Mack Stadium, 3-2.
  • 1957 Citing poor attendance as the reason, Giants’ president Horace Stoneham, ignoring baseball’s edict of banning announcements about relocation of franchises until after the World Series, informs the press the club has signed a lease to play its home games in San Francisco next season. The club’s Board of Directors voted 8-1 approving the shift to the West Coast, with the only dissenting vote cast by M. Donald Grant, who will become the chairman of the Mets, an expansion team located in New York to fill the National League void created by the departure of the Giants and Dodgers to California.
  • 2004 Pitching a perfect bottom of the ninth inning, John Smoltz establishes the franchise record with his 142nd save in a Braves uniform. The right-handed reliever surpasses Gene Garber as Atlanta beats the Dodgers in Los Angeles, 6-5.
  • 2008 The Dodgers reacquired Greg Maddux (6-9, 3.99) from the Padres for cash and two minor leaguers to be named or an additional monetary sum. The 42 year-old future Hall of Fame right-hander, obtained to help the club down the stretch run, played in LA for part of the 2006 season, winning six of nine decisions.

  1. One walk and two hits through seven innings, and then a walk and four hits in the eighth.

    • The Dodgers have had two Hudsons and three Millers on their pitching staff this year. Pepiot is the 37th pitcher that they have used this year. That includes position players Miguel Rojas, Yonny Hernandez and Luke Williams.

  2. Maybe it’s just Florida, but I find the Fish irritating. Carl Hiaasen’s great, though.

    • Growing up in L.A., I used to love going to twi-night twinbills at Dodger Stadium with my closest friend, who was the first in our group to get a car. The best were on summer evenings, when I didn’t have a care in the world.

      • Those scheduled double headers are long gone. I was at one where both games went extra innings.

        • Long gone indeed. I would keep score for both games, eat a couple of Dodger Dogs and drink a way-too-sweet Orange soda. Upon returning home, with both my parents now asleep, I’d tabulate the scorebooks, fall asleep, and then rise in the late morning before heading to La Cienega Park in Beverly Hills, although we lived nearby in L.A., to play softball all day. Good years.

          • When I wasn’t playing over-the-line or ping pong, once a week I would play golf all day with three friends. In the winter it would be dawn to dusk golf.

      • My first ever experience at Dodger Stadium was a doubleheader against Houston in September of 1966. Sandy blanked them 4-0 in the first game, while Joe Moeller, Bob Miller and Phil Regan combined for a 1-0 shutout in the second.

    • Not a straight line route but a fantastic catch. He might have initially underestimated how hard it was hit.
