Dodgers at Padres, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA, various (see Game 108 post for channels)
RHP Tony Gonsolin (6-4, 4.11 ERA) goes for the Dodgers and RHP Seth Lugo (4-5, 3.54 ERA) does so for the Padres.
- 2003 Fireballer Eric Gagne ties the single-season record for consecutive saves to start a season, established in 1995 by Jose Mesa of the Indians. The Dodger closer strikes out the Reds’ side in the ninth inning for his 38th save this season and 46th consecutive regular-season save overall.
In other baseball history, in 1972 the Baseball Hall of Fame inducts pitchers Sandy Koufax (1st year of eligibility, 86.9% of the vote), the author of four no-hitters, and three hundred game winner Early Wynn (4th year, 76.0%). Yogi Berra (2nd year, 85.6%), who retired as the AL leader for catcher putouts with 8,723 and owns more World Series Championship rings than anyone else who’s ever played the game, is also enshrined in Cooperstown.
We saw part of this during Sunday’s game; here’s the full 12-minute conversation between ESPN’s Karl Ravech, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.
Lineups when available.
The Dodgers have now scored 59 runs in their last seven games (6-1), an average of 8.4 runs per game, while allowing 28 (4.0). They outscored the Padres 34-22 in this series. (8.5 to 5.5).
Muncy, Peralta and Heyward is quite a gauntlet for a right hander to face.
A cooked goose?
Ha!
After three Goose looked cooked, but he was not.
Kike!!!!
Gonsolin at 58 pitches through four innings.
A reasonable pitch count. If he can go two more good innings, I’ll reconsider my lost faith.
Me, too. It would be remarkable if he got a W today, but I am getting far ahead of myself.
There’s a long way to go.
It might be, it could be, it is. Grand Slam. Holy Cow..
Thank you, Mel Allen.
Harry Caray.
“A Ballantine Blast!”
Mel Allen / Ballantine Beer.
Anywhere other than Wrigley, a Monday afternoon game feels bizarre. It’s a getaway day of sorts, but Dodgers have just a short flight to Phoenix and Pads, headed for Seattle, will stay in the same time zone.
Even with all that scoring, the game came in at under three hours, 2:46 to be precise, according to the box score.
Woo-HOO!!!!
Hot Dog!! Dodgers win.
A perfect day for Outman: three singles, one double and one walk. Now up to .259.
With a .799 OPS now.
Rojas really is an outstanding defender.
Yes, and despite his low average he often comes through in the clutch.
San Diego really does have a nice ballpark. I wouldn’t mind having one of those straw hats.
I saw two Dodgers-Padres games there a few years ago. We had field level for the first game, but the grade up the steps was not that much and it was hard to see over the heads of the people in front of us. We were on the top deck the next day and we had a great view of the field and the water.
OK, Joe, just don’t hit anybody and start a brawl.
Better than walking them and wild pitching them over.
Yeah, I suppose so. Did you see video of the fight in yesterday’s Chisox-Guardians game?
Yep. Classic. Anderson is a punk. Glad AF didn’t trade for him.
He sure got decked in that short fight.
Certainly his MO, but last appearance it was a passed ball by Willie
Well, that was dumb baserunning.
Ridiculously so.
Nice play J-Hey..
Everybody is the Dodgers lineup has at least one hit and has scored at least one run. Everybody but Freeman and Outman has at least one RBI.
This game feels definitive. Trades schmades.
Does it get any better than this?
¡Quique!
Need a shut down inning from Gonzo.
Ask and ye shall receive..
Lugo three-upped Gonsolin.
Mookie: rally killer.
How about this offense?
Crazy 8’s!!
Mookie!!!! I peeked again and I’m glad I did!
Late to the lambasting.
But, the day is young!
This team is starting to feel special.
It’s gone from lambasting to lamb basting.
Going, Going, Gonsolin. This guy isn’t hacking it and hasn’t for quite a while. Fifteen earned runs in his last 18 innings.
For somebody who once looked like a foundation of the rotation, he’s been sadly awful.
Too early to say, but was last year an outlier?
I wish I didn’t have to be so pessimistic.
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
Longer track record than that, though with decidedly fewer innings.
I think something is physically wrong with him. Needs a trip to the IL.
Make that four hits, and it’s 4-0. Sigh. Buh bye!
I check in, and watch a walk and three hits off Gonsolin including a HR. Jinx! Maybe I should stop watching.
I’m less discouraged by the score than I am by Gonso’s performance.
We aren’t blaming you.
Beauty of a 3-6-3!
Muncy is back in the lineup in the cleanup spot. I would have had him batting sixth or seventh until he shows he can do more than homer, strikeout or walk. (total of 192 out of 379 plate appearances). He is batting below .200 for his second straight season, but he does maintain good slugging and OPS numbers.
I don’t get it either Scoop.
As Churchill said about the Soviet Union after it signed a non-aggression pact with the Nazis in 1939: “A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”
Gets on base and scores.
Love me some Churchill. We shall never surrender.
We shall fight them on the bases, we shall fight them in the batter’s box, we shall fight them in the field of play.
Excellent.
