Game 103, 2023

Reds at Dodgers, 6:10 PM PDT, TV: BS Ohio, SPNLA

RHP Luke Weaver (2-2, 7.20 ERA) goes to the mound for the Redlegs while RHP Emmet Sheehan (3-1, 6.75 ERA) pitches for the home team.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1915 Pirates third baseman Honus Wagner reaches Robins hurler Jeff Pfeffer for a grand slam in the eighth inning, helping Pittsburgh beat Brooklyn at Forbes Field, 8-2. The inside-the-park round-tripper makes the 41 year-old infielder the oldest player ever to hit a home run with the bases full, a record which will last until 1985.
  • 1996 After a mild heart attack last month, Tommy Lasorda, 68 year-old Dodger manager of twenty years, announces his retirement due to his health. The future Hall of Fame skipper, who was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1983 and ’88, led Los Angeles to four pennants and two World Series championships during his 21 seasons at the helm.

Lineups when available.

Mookie dropped from the lineup for as-yet-unexplained reasons.

    • Maybe Muncy will have the Reds Manager making similar Lasorda post game remarks.

  1. Well WBB – you had asked for a laugher tonight. I’d be willing to forgo that in exchange for a 1,2,3 top of the ninth.

  2. Kids must have loved watching Joe play pin the tail on the donkey when he was a kid. The tail could have ended up anywhere from the back end of the donkey to the next door neighbour’s cellar window.

  3. I hope the pen doesn’t waste this good work by a starter. I also want the offence to score again.

    • Sheehan was pitching free and easy and getting more efficient as the game wore on. If the goal was to get him out of the game with the most confidence going into his next start, that was achieved.

But, will he get another start with the Dodgers?

  4. I wonder if both Max and JD end up with more HR’s than Mookie by the end of the season.

  5. I want the Reds to pass the Brewers to move into first place in their division. Just not during this series.

    • I have a good friend, a Wisconsinite in Chilean Patagonia, from whom I won a big dinner bet over Bellinger v. Yelich as MVP. I’d like to give him a shot at revenge.

  6. Max seems out of his May-June swoon, with OPS+ above 130 for July. Least we forget he was OPS+ 191 in March/April with 11 dingers.

  7. Sheehan looking pretty good but pitch count is high. Hope he can go at least 5 innings.

  8. Meanwhile, at Software Stadium, JT has delivered a game-tying ninth-inning single against the Gnats’ “ace closer” Doval.

    • A guy gets stopped for speeding The officer says he was clocked at 80 by a helicopter. The driver said he was on cruise control set at 65 so there must be a mistake. His wife then said their car didn’t have cruise control.

The officer then said he was also going to write him up for not wearing a seatbelt. The driver said he just took it off so he could get his license. His wife then said, oh hon, you never wear your seatbelt. The driver told his wife to stop talking.

The officer then said he was going to write him up for not wearing corrective lenses because his license said they were required. The driver said he was wearing contact lenses. His wife then said he doesn’t have contact lenses. The driver then told his wife to shut up just once in your life, will you just shut up.

The officer then asked the driver’s wife if he always talks to her that way. She said no officer, only when he has had a few drinks.

  9. I’ve been watching the Gnats (a rare occurence because of blackouts here) and the Sawx, who are letting us down so far.
