Game 64, 2023

Dodgers at Phillies, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: NBC10, SPNLA, TeleXitos

RHP Michael Grove (0-2, 8.14 ERA) goes for the Dodgers and Ranger Suárez (1-2, 5.47 ERA) goes for the Phillies.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1919 Dodger standout pitcher Rube Marquard breaks his leg running the bases, ending his season with a record of 3-3. The hard-throwing southpaw will finish his 18-year Hall of Fame career in 1925, after compiling a 201-177 record along with an ERA of 3.08.
  • 1973 Right-fielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, ‘Le Grand Orange’ gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first, and then throws home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.
  • 1990 Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle’s major league mark, hitting a homer from both sides of the plate for the tenth time in his career. The switch-hitting first baseman’s second home run of the game, batting left-handed against Eric Show, proves to be the eventual winning run in the Dodgers’ 5-4 victory over San Diego in the 11th inning at Jack Murphy Stadium.

  1. Vargas hits a ball that Castellanos was able to catch. That’s something of a novelty.

    • On the bright side, the Gnats had a walk-off of sorts. They blew a late-inning lead and, trailing by a run in the ninth, they went 1-2-3, with Greasylocks looking at a third strike to end it.

    • Three walk-off losses in four games is very painful. Per Eric Stephen, the last time the Dodgers managed this was in 1992, en route to 99 losses and their only last place finish in LA.

  2. The problem right now is that any one of our relievers can blow up at any time, even the previously reliable Ferguson and Phillips. We are hurting.

  3. Who was the person who just posted that the Dodgers haven’t scored past the 4th inning on this road trip? Oh, yeah, it was me.

  4. This is only the fifth time in his career, including the post-season, that Smith has struck out 3 times in a game. In his rookie season, he once struck out 4 times in a game.

  5. Fillies’ reliever is from my hometown (spoiler – I never lived there).

  6. Thus far on this road trip — three-plus games — we have scored 21 runs in the first four innings and none in the subsequent five innings.

    • His current ERA with 30 innings perhaps not as indicative as career 3.26 ERA over 300 innings. He is a very good pitcher.

    • Given the restrictions on where infielders are allowed to play this season, and having observed last season that Muncy seemed to hit a lot of balls into short right field that were converted into outs, I expected that his batting average would greatly increase this season. Thus far, I have been wrong.

    • Agreed. Syndergaard is out of the rotation for awhile. Dodgers need to find someone to replace Grove. But, I don’t have that answer.

      • Well, I thought it was Urias. But, I guess that will have to wait. Maybe, there just isn’t an answer. Throw a bullpen game? Rough stretch until we get some guys back from the IL.

  7. Sigh. Arizona put up 7 in the 7th inning, highlighted by Corbin Carroll’s grand slam, and now leads Detroit 9-2.

  8. So Urias is not coming back on Sunday now? That’s a bit of a blow in terms of the Dodgers starters.

  9. Deluca is now hitting .333. Only trails Freddie’s .336 by a small amount.
Small sample size? What small sample size?

  10. Will strikes out on what looked like a wide one. But Gameday is not definitive.
