Game 91, 2014

Dodgers at Rockies, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Josh Beckett v. Yohan Flande. We all know about the season Josh Beckett is having (5-5, 2.37 ERA, and it should have several more wins than that). Mr. Flande is a rookie whose appearance today will be his third in the major leagues. He’s 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA.

Carl Crawford is beginning a rehab assignment in Albuquerque this weekend.

  1. Several writers are making noise about the Rocks trading Tulowitzki. More than anyone else I’d like to see the Dodgers get him. And nobody on the major or minor rosters would be safe unless their names were Kershaw, Grienke, and Ryu.

  2. 17 games straight ends with an 11-6 record . . . impressive!
Enjoy the day off, guys, and end strong . . . especially Sunday, when it looks like I’ll be there.

    • Given the lack of days off, an enviable record. Even played well enough to let Pérez and Maholm pitch in the same game.

  3. Bumgarner and Pence selected to the All-Star team from the Giants, Posey not.

  4. Maholm has been pretty decent out of the pen. Doesn’t mean he should see high leverage situations any time soon, likely not at all. Even for all his struggles he has a lower ERA than Wilson, not that 5+ is good–which both have.

  5. Kershaw and Greinke also named to All-Star team. Haven’t seen reserves yet.

      • great, well deserved. (put him in as a pinch runner and get him to steal all 3 bases to score)

      • Excellent for Gordon. Four Dodgers — Puig, Kershaw, Greinke and Gordon. That has to be our largest number in some time.

    • No AGon? He fell off but thought he might be a reserve. Also, too many Dodgers.

    • Hopefully they can all contribute to an NL win which becomes self-serving!

  6. Hope Wilson doesn’t say anything again like earlier this season when he more or less attributed fouling up to not pitching important innings late in a game.

This inning not particularly important, but it is late. Starting with a BB and a hit is not how you want to begin any inning.

  7. All-Star Game Starters (just announced)
    American League:
    C: Salvador Perez, Royals
    1B: Miguel Cabrera, Tigers
    2B: Robinson Cano, Mariners

    3B: Josh Donaldson, A’s
    OF: Jose Bautista, Blue Jays
    OF: Mike Trout, Angels
    OF: Adam Jones, Orioles
    DH: Nelson Cruz, Orioles

    National League
    C: Yadier Molina, Cardinals
    1B: Paul Goldschmidt, D-backs
    2B: Chase Utley, Phillies
    SS: Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies
    3B: Aramis Ramirez, Brewers
    OF: Andrew McCutchen, Pirates
    OF: Carlos Gomez, Brewers
    OF: Yasiel Puig, Dodgers

  8. This would be a Rule 8 violation except that Triunfel continues to provide new fodder. He apparently forgot how many outs there were there, so instead of what should have been an inning-ending DP, a run scores.

  9. Kemp 4 for 5, continuing recent tear. Great. Hope more Bison power returns soon as well.

    • that swing to bring in Puig was so controlled, soft and he placed the ball exactly where he wanted it to go

  10. Saw where JP came in, switched over to Gameday to see what he was doing. Too late. Six pitches, 2 outs, inning over. Dude is efficient. Seems to do that kind of thing pretty often. I approve.

          • Thought about commenting that Lasorda could.

In that case, good thing baseball doesn’t have a delay of game penalty because you’d have to use a sundial to time Lasorda lumbering to first after a walk.

          • I only played 2 seasons of organised baseball when I was younger, my very first at bat ever I got plunked in the middle of the back (I’m happy it wasn’t 100 mph) 🙂

          • At least you hung on. My son’s first AB in coach-pitch, age 5, he swung at the first pitch he ever saw and fouled it into his face. That and a few other unfortunate things that first season kinda soured him. I joked that he decided this game hurt too much

At our urging he played one more season, then balked.

It developed that he just wanted to play, while the other kids wanted to play ball.

            .

        • Sorry. I was being facetious. Remember when we had both Tomko and Henrickson in the rotation? That wasn’t good.

          • Had to be major embarrassing for him, but I wish video were still around of Hendrickson falling down on the mound. Sometimes slapstick comedy is the best kind.

    • Ordinarily I don’t wish bad performances by any Dodger. But the team would be better served long run if he comes back out, gives up a couple more, and it leads to his becoming an ex-Dodger.

Even his staunchest supporters among Dodger brass–who would that be exactly, anyhow?–aren’t blind, don’t appear to be deaf. I’ll withhold judgment on dumb.

  11. I doubt that there is a single person who posts on this site who thought recalling Triunfel was a good idea.

  12. Things still could go south, but outside of Dan “Dinger” Haren, Dodger starters are very noticeably not affected by pitching in Coors, at least not this series.

Course, the other 2 were Greinke and Koufax, um, Kershaw, slackers both while allowing one earned across 16 innings, fanning 8 each.

Adding Beckett’s whitewash so far today, that’s a single ER across 21 innings–in COORS.

  13. Did somebody tell Beckett I was beefing about no Ks? Guess maybe I could beef because he now has just one…
    ======================
Hey–it’s working. Hey, Beckett, why only 2 Ks this game? You losing it?

One more and you’ll stil have as many as you walked to mess up the SP streak. ..

(Work with me here, guys. We may have stumbled onto something.)

  14. After he caught the ball, all the catcher had to do was step on the plate for the force.

  15. The good news is that if Josh comes up again, the run total will be higher.

  16. Slugger Beckett to light the fire. Isn’t that three 2B for him his last couple games?

Doing well today on the mound too. Especially since DM basically said he’s holding together with bailing wire, duct tape, horse liniment, and hope.

But no Ks a yellow light, since he averages around one per IP….

Up 3-zip maybe it won’t matter.

    • Hopefully it’s a looong parade — the kind you want to end when you’re trying to cross it while driving!

    • Feel the same way — they may start swinging with 3-0 counts with two on.

  17. Time for Gonzalez to deliver big (I’m happy for just a single too ) 🙂

  18. C’mon, bring Josh in and give him time to rest . . . let’s get some runs!

  19. Josh with the Dodger pitchers’ mantra to the others: ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me.’

Still, it’s up to someone else to bring him in.

  20. I guess DM gave Kemp the green light on 3-0 to try to get him in a groove. It didn’t work.

    • I thought that was a bit odd, especially when Van Slyke follows with a single

  21. Gameday video is tagged Gordon’s infield single being the 100th hit of the season, that’s pretty impressive

    • JP-esque! Actually, Dee’s OBP, SLG and successful steal rate this year are much better that Juan Pierre’s career rates.

  22. “Dodgers place Arruebarrena on DL, promote Triunfel”

Now, that’s a really reassuring first thing to see, signing on to call up Gameday. Lists other Dodger IF woes.

The AS break can’t get here too soon for this team…probably all others too. But none of their stories can compete with this:

“And Minor League infielder Alex Guerrero has been on the DL since having a portion of his ear bitten off by former teammate Miguel Olivo in May.”

    • The surprise is that they didn’t wait ten days and use him to pinch-run a couple times before DLing him.

    • It’s disappointing that Triunfel is the best we have available right now given how he performed in the majors this year.

  23. Hanley not in starting line up today, but since they have been nursing him he has produced. In 7 games with 17 PA he has managed an OPS of 1.134.

  24. Although Butera has been better than expected, I’d still like to see the Dodgers get a better catcher. Rumor has it that Kurt Suzuki is available and I’d like that. I envision using him and AJ on a 50/50 basis with maybe a relief for Agon thrown in sometimes. That would free up SVS to play for Ethier or Crawford against lefties.

    • As far as I can tell Minnesota’s Gardenhire really likes Suzuki, so I don’t know where that rumor is coming from. Butera has become Beckett’s personal catcher this season. SVS can play first if A-Gon needs a day off, and on those days that would free up a spot in the outfield for Crawford if he comes back.
