Early early Beatles

I was watching PBS’s American Masters program tonight. The Master featured was Carole King. An hour later I was reading in my chair with the radio on, and the host was having a Beatles-fest. He played the band’s version of Carole and husband Gerry’s “Take Good Care of My Baby” and I almost fell out of my chair. I had no idea they’d played that old chestnut (the one that Bobby Vee made a hit in 1961).

The Beatles recorded at least one Goffin-King song — “Chains,” on the “Introducing…The Beatles” album from Vee-Jay — but this one never made it to any of the original albums. The group performed it at their Decca audition on New Year’s Day 1962.
