Pretty good steak, too

About every six months there’s a guy driving a meat truck around our neighborhood, ostensibly making deliveries to customers who’ve ordered in advance. Personally, I think he’s prospecting rather than delivering. He’s stopped at our house maybe four times to try to sell me on his products, which are frozen steaks in various cuts, pork chops, burgers, and a fish box. I’ve always blown him off until yesterday.

He came up and knocked on the door and showed me his wares, and said he’d sell me an entire meat box at half-price because he was overstocked. Well, an entire box contains all of this for $369:

5 (12 oz.) USDA Choice Aged New York Strip Steak
6 (10 oz.) USDA Choice Aged Flat Iron Steak
8 (8 oz.) USDA Lemon Pepper Pork Chop
8 (8 oz.) USDA Choice Aged Peppercorn Steak
8 (8 oz.) USDA Choice Aged Teriyaki Steak
12 (12 oz.) USDA Choice Aged Steak Burger

I told him no thanks, my freezer was full, which was the truth. But then he suggested he could sell me one of those items for $40. I thought about that and about my freezer for a minute and said “Okay. Lemme have a box of the Peppercorn Steaks.” I wrote him a check, took my steaks inside and put them into a gallon-sized plastic bag (labeled! I’ve learned my lesson with unmarked freezer bags!) and stuck it in the freezer.

Today I cooked one of them, and it was darned good. Really really tender after about 3-4 minutes per side, still mostly rare. It needed salt, but other than that it went fine with a baked potato and some whole kernel corn.

I am now more inclined to think about purchasing from this outfit than I previously had been, that’s for sure.
