Get yer kicks

I have new and desperately needed shoes! The old ones were cracking at the toes and at the base of the big toe. Nike Air Force 1s. I’ve never owned Nike shoes until today.

Since I was there I went across the street and found (hooray!) the burrito distributor had delivered to the commissary between Thursday and today.

  1. Confess, I have nothing nice to say about Nike. They generally do not come in widths (which, how is it they keep getting nice reviews from pro athletes in the absence thereof?). New Balance, some of which are made in the USA, are pretty good as kicking around shoes, though I confess I am fonder of the Japanese-made Mizunos for running shoes.

  2. I was astonished at how many neon greens, reds, even blues there were. Whites were hard to find, so when I did I grabbed ’em. They were maybe $10 more than the New Balance ones.

The ambiance of the Navy Exchange shoe department is somewhat diminished at the moment. Because of interior renovations the entire stock is on temp shelves and long tables out under a tent in the parking lot. It wasn’t all that conducive to leisurely picking and choosing. 😉

  3. Since I have rather wide, flat feet, I can’t wear Nikes (or a lot of other shoes, Reeboks for instance). New Balance are my faves for heavy walking shoes. For street shoes I buy SAS, mostly their “Free time” model – they come in “wide” and are leather so they look a little more formal than running shoes; they don’t come in red or neon green.

Rob’s question about athlete endorsements is very valid.
