When pulp became paperback

This novel by “Luke Short,” the pen name of Frederick Glidden, was originally published in the pulp magazine Western Story in six consecutive issues from March 4 to April 8 of 1939 (see here). What I find interesting is how closely Dell followed the style of the magazine covers in 1964. Well, that and the price of the book. I wonder how many pulp magazine artists and illustrators managed to switch to the paperback business when the pulps started to die. 1964 book cover
