Meteorite!

No, not the one scheduled to come by this evening. This one arrived yesterday in Russia, and Gizmodo has collected several dashboard-camera views of it. That might sound like pretty cheesy video, but it really isn’t. It’s amazing stuff, and it’s mostly short clips: nothing more than five minutes.

There’s also a link to an explanation of why Russians have dash cams mounted in their cars from Jalopnik in Gizmodo’s comments. The short answer: evidence for insurance and police reports.

  1. My spouse told me about hearing about that about people so anxious to avoid litigation with all the corruption in Russia, that they just video record their motoring all the time!

That said, doesn’t sound like a bad idea in the U.S.. Wish I had a video camera mounted when someone pulled out in front of me in 2001, and got away with it because they had police connections!

Anyway, with so many people having video cameras now, it’s pretty cool that most of these things get captured on film.
There’s a survey meteor sky camera in Canada somewhere – I saw a web site at some point about it. Think that’s pretty cool.
