R.I.P. Mike Wallace

Back in the heyday of “60 Minutes” there used to be a phrase going around that went something like this: “You know it’s going to be a bad day when you answer your doorbell and find Mike Wallace on your stoop.”

Of all the principal correspondents in the 1970s and 1980s, including Wallace, Harry Reasoner, Morley Safer and Ed Bradley, it seemed to be Wallace that got the highest-profile exposés. If you were a public figure and suspected of impropriety, he could be a very tough interviewer. On the other hand, he did a lot of softball interviews with celebrities, and he seemed equally comfortable doing both.

Rest in peace, Mr. Wallace.
