Yesterday’s elections

Wins in a few off-year elections are no reason to gloat loudly, but I am really pleased that voters in such disparate locations as Ohio, Maine, Mississippi and Arizona reversed policies or recalled those policies’ advocates yesterday.

Ohio’s resounding defeat of Governor Kasich’s attempt to eliminate collective bargaining for public workers was super. Mississippi’s somewhat surprising defeat of that awful anti-choice anti-woman “personhood” bill probably shouldn’t be taken as an omen, but it was gratifying. Maine’s return of same-day voter registration to law was a blow against the Republican “war on (Democratic) voters” we’ve seen in some 31 states over the past year. And Arizona’s recall of that miserable blowhard State Senator Russell Pearce shows that even in Goldwater country some extremism is a vice.

Good on you, voters!
