Norquist redux

In Sunday’s 60 Minutes interview by Steve Kroft of Grover Norquist, Kroft missed an opportunity. He could have (and should have, in my view) asked a simple question:

“Who the hell elected you to dictate American tax policy?”

Of all the slimy things Norquist said in the course of that interview, this one gets my vote for “Most Heartless” and also for “Most Evocative of Libertarian Philosophy”:

Kroft: Do you feel the government has any obligation to the poor or the elderly or the unemployed?

Norquist: Yeah. It should stop stepping on them, kicking them and making their lives more difficult.

I’d ask a question of Norquist: Do you feel that you have a right to use products and services provided by government entities? If you were burglarized, would you feel that it was your right to have public servants in the form of policemen investigate the crime and their obligation to do so, or would you rather those government employees keep out of your business?

The Republican Party has a lot of despicable people supporting it, but Norquist’s in the top five.
