St. Ronald was a heretic

As Steve Benen points out, Reagan raised taxes in seven of the eight years he was in office. That has become such anathema to the current Republican party that Reagan probably couldn’t win a Republican primary this year or next.

Benen quotes a WaPo article:

Reagan wrote: “The full consequences of a default — or even the serious prospect of default — by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate. Denigration of the full faith and credit of the United States would have substantial effects on the domestic financial markets and the value of the dollar.”

The current crop of Republican leaders is in effect denying the words of the one man they revere above all other former leaders of their party.

If they won’t even listen to their hero, we’re probably headed over a cliff.
