Now the environmentalists are mad too

News item: Former Interior Secretary Babbitt Chides Obama

Babbitt said

the administration has acquiesced to riders that conservatives placed on the interim budget, including one that took the gray wolf off the endangered species list in several states and another that gutted a program meant to reduce overfishing.

Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, warned that Obama’s inaction could cost him in 2012. “Unless there’s a change in his policies, he will likely face very damp enthusiasm from young voters and a significant portion of the base that wants him to stand up to polluters,” Brune said. “I definitely think there are many progressive donors in general and environmental donors in particular whose enthusiasm won’t be what it was in 2008.”

In fact, back in February the House Republicans announced their intent to

nullify all of the steps the EPA has taken to date on the [greenhouse gas] issue, including a finding that greenhouse gases endanger public health.

In addition, it seeks to strip the agency of its authority to use the law in any future attempts to crack down on the emissions from factories, utilities and other stationary sources.

Once cap-and-trade died in the Congress, the Administration has been really quiet about environmental issues. If that’s an attempt to avoid the screams from the right that he’s a regulatin’ fool out to destroy jobs, it hasn’t worked.

Since it hasn’t worked, Mr. President, get up on your hind legs and screech. There are more people who care about the environment than there are members of the loony-tunes wing of the Republican party. They need to see some leadership from you, and if they don’t, they’re going to remain unhappy with you.

  1. Don’t get MAD. get LMAD!

It’s time for American Progressives concerned about rising temperatures, health care for all and illegal immigration and American Conservatives concerned about rising federal debt, bigger government and rational taxation to quit navel gazing and realize the obvious: they need to BUY each other off in order to effectively address their pet ideological concerns—there is no other way. This means trading things like a carbon tax, healthcare for all (with a public option) and amnesty for a balanced budget, strict limited government (tied to GDP) and an end to the corporate income tax plus other tax reforms. This plan is outlined at letsmakeadeal-thebook.com.

Progressives and Conservatives are actually making the same apocalyptic arguments albeit on different issues. They both make good arguments for action. But the public is yawningly uninterested in global warming for instance and unwilling to make the hard choices on America’s fiscal problems. Buying off the opposition is the American way so use the system we have to get the outcome you want. And that’s what Let’s Make A Deal—The Plan is all about: getting the outcome you want.

So get the outcome you want at: https://letsmakeadeal-thebook.com/
