While watching the game yesterday my host and I figured it out: he’s hosted a Super Bowl party for 16 of the last 17 years.
I’ve been to all of them, from the super-patriotic Super Bowl XXV in Tampa between the NY Giants and the Buffalo Bills (do you remember wide right?) to yesterday’s game, also in Tampa.
We’re in a rut.
I was wondering about your “super-patriotic” tag for XXV, until I took a moment to subtract XVIII (that’s XLIII-XXV) from MMIX.
Oh yeah, Poppy’s war.
Whitney Houston. Military jets overhead (somewhat diminished by their appearance at virtually every big sporting event since then). Pictures of soldiers in Kuwait awaiting orders to attack. A pervasive sense that the Gulf War might actually be something worth doing, unlike the Bush 2 version.
