Hawai’i got off pretty lightly in Sunday’s earthquake, all things considered. Apparently that’s in part because the quake was so deep: 28km (just under 17 miles). There are frequent earthquakes on the Big Island, but most are volcano-related; this one was the kind the rest of the world recognizes: one caused by plate movement. Preliminary estimates have property damage at $40 million, but that’s expected to rise. Here’s a story about building damages.

Michael, I had one from Crazy Shirts telling the world I survived Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
It would be poor taste, maybe, if there’d been any deaths or serious injuries. Since there were none, I don’t think most people who live here are gonna have any problems with this at all. Besides, Crazy Shirts is a long-time member of the community and has done a fair bit of good works here; I think people will recognize that.
