Game 96, 2023

Dodgers at Rangers, 5:05 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports Southwest, SPNLA

RHP Tony Gonsolin (5-3, 3.72 ERA) takes the mound at Globe Life Field. He’ll face old friend LHP Andrew Heaney (6-6, 4.43 ERA), who elected free agency after one season with the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1930 Harvey Henrick’s ninth-inning three-run round-tripper off the bench gives the Dodgers a dramatic 9-8 come-from-behind victory over the Redbirds at Ebbets Field in the first game of a twin bill. Redbirds George Puccinelli and Jim Bottomley and Brooklyn’s Hal Lee also homer appearing as pinch-hitters in the game.
  • 1956 In a 13-6 defeat to the Cubs, Dodgers’ shortstop Pee Wee Reese becomes one of five active players to collect 2000 hits, and teammate Junior Gilliam sets a major league record by handling 12 assists at second base.
  • 1963 The usually mild-mannered Dodger manager Walter Alston is thrown out of both games of a doubleheader when the Braves sweep a twin bill from Los Angeles for the first and only time in Milwaukee, 7-2 and 13-7. To make matters worse, the manager has beer thrown in his face by a hometown fan as he leaves the second game. (My thanks to Lee for sharing this entry. He attended the game at County Stadium as a ten year-old. -LP)
  • 2003 At Dodger Stadium, Vladimir Guerrero hit his 226th career home run, breaking Andre Dawson’s club record. The Expos’ right fielder hits his milestone round-tripper off Odalis Perez, a 454-foot blast over the left field wall.

Game 91, 2022

Giants at Dodgers, 7:09 PM PDT, TV: ESPN

LHP Carlos Rodón (8-5, 2.66 ERA) takes the mound for the visiting Giants and RHP Mitch White (1-2, 4.20 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. Rodón was picked to replace Josh Hader of the Brewers in the All Star Game but then decided the split nail and blood blister on the middle finger of his left hand needed rest, so he declined the opportunity to play (and was replaced by the Dodgers’ Tyler Anderson). This will be White’s ninth start this season; he’s gotten past the fifth inning just once.

Game 97, 2021

Giants at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: NBCS BA, SPNLA

The visiting Giants send RHP Logan Webb (4-3, 3.54 ERA) to the Dodger Stadium mound to face the Dodgers’ LHP Julio Urías (12-3, 3.78 ERA). Urías’ 12 wins tie him for the Major League Lead with the Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks.

Game 102, 2019

Marlins vs. Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: FS-F, SPNLA

The visiting Marlins send Hawai’i boy RHP Jordan Yamamoto (4-0, 1.59 ERA) to the mound to face the Dodgers’ RHP Walker Buehler (8-1, 3.44 ERA). Yamamoto has gotten a lot of ink in the local newspaper; our local TV stations don’t even bother with sports news anymore so I haven’t seen him there. He’s made six starts and given up no more than four hits in any of them. Buehler gave up six runs to the Phillies on Tuesday (only two were earned — there’s the Dodgers’ suddenly suspect defense) but gave up no more and went six innings while the Dodgers caught up and took him off the hook.

Here’s Beaty’s HR in the bottom of the 8th inning to retake the lead lost in the top of the inning:

No Bellinger, no CT3. Just a day off for each of them? I didn’t hear why Bellinger left last night’s game in the double switch; was there any speculation?

Game 98, 2018

Dodgers at Brewers, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: SPNLA, FSWI, Dish455

LHP Clayton Kershaw (3-4, 2.74 ERA) starts the second half of the season with a losing record for the first time since his rookie year. However, after his two trips to the disabled list he’s getting back to his normal sterling self; he’s gotten through the sixth inning in each of his last three starts and gotten wins in two of them. He’ll face RHP Chase Anderson (6-7, 3.78 ERA), who has a 1.65 ERA over his last five starts but has only a 1-1 record and three no-decisions to show for that good work.

Interesting note: “Manny Machado is the first player to reach base at least 4 times in his Dodgers debut since Rafael Furcal on April 3, 2006. (@EliasSports)”

Game 97, 2017

Braves at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSO

The Braves plan to start YALHP Jaime Garcia (3-7, 4.33 ERA) unless they trade him during the day. He seems to be a hot commodity, although from his record an objective observer might wonder why. He (or somebody) will face the Dodgers’ LHP Alex Wood (11-0, 1.56 ERA), who’ll be making his second start against his former team. The first one didn’t go well: in April of 2016 he allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits over four innings and took the loss.
