Game 28, 2024

Dodgers at Blue Jays, Time: 4:07 PM PDT, TV: SN1, SPNLA, Sportsnet+

RHP Gavin Stone (1-1, 6.00 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers while RHP Chris Bassitt (2-3, 3.90 ERA) pitches for the Jays.

After the fooferaw last offseason with the Jays thinking they might be signing Ohtani, his first visit there this season should be interesting. There are no hard feelings on the part of the Jays’ organization, apparently, but the fans remember the untrue rumor that had the Angels’ free agent flying to Toronto and may razz him a little.

Pandemonium set in on Dec. 8, following an inaccurate report that morning that Ohtani had reached an agreement with the Blue Jays and a subsequent inaccurate report that he was on a flight to Toronto. Suddenly, the eyes of a nation of baseball fans were glued to online flight trackers, with some fans in the area of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport even timing it to watch the plane fly overhead as it passed.

“I was just following the news. I knew I wasn’t on that flight, so I was curious too,” Ohtani said Wednesday through interpreter Will Ireton.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 2001 After two and a half years in the post, Kevin Malone resigns as the general manager of the Dodgers. Despite having the league’s largest payroll, Los Angeles has failed to make the playoffs during his tenure.
  • 2008 Brad Penny’s 96-mph fastball is missed by Dodger batterymate Russell Martin and knocks out umpire Kerwin Danley. After the players are asked to leave the field, the home plate arbitrator, who lost consciousness briefly, is placed on a stretcher and leaves the Dodgers-Rockies game in an ambulance.
  • 2008 “We can’t tell you to survive the storms of life, we can tell you to dance in the rain, and you can do it. You really can do it. Very difficult, but possible.” – VIN SCULLY, delivering the commencement address at Pepperdine University. (Take note of the graduates’ headgear.)

Vin Scully receives an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Pepperdine University in Malibu, the institution’s highest honor. The Dodgers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster delivers a stirring commencement address to the 2008 Class of Seaver College, telling the graduates that achieving dreams may be “very difficult, but possible”.

Lineups when available.

  1. In fairness to the Scrub Jays, they had to wait out a three-hour rain delay in KC yesterday before their game was declared a loss, so they probably got much later into Canadia than the Dodgers did.

  2. Oh James. Outman could be ticketed for OKC when Heyward comes back and if Pagés stays hot. That is if they don’t release KT3.

    • One of the questions Doc was asked when he interviewed for Manager was what he would have done with Pederson when he was slumping early in his career. His answer was he would have sent him down. Maybe that is a clue to what might happen but I hope not. BTW, Joc is off to a great start this year.

    • Lefty for lefty seems like the most straightforward approach. Pages then becomes full time CF.

  3. Every Dodger with a hit except for James, who is the outman in the lineup for Bassitt

  4. Stone showing he also has a Knack for pitching. My eyes are blurred and dilated so I don’t see what I type very well.

  5. Vargas is doing well in OK and Pages is doing well everywhere. The Dodgers could have a couple of young corner outfielders later this year.

  6. Anyone going to put any money on the Lakers winning the series against the Nuggets?
