Game 7, 2024

Giants at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCS BA, SPNLA

RHP Keeton Winn (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start of the year for the Giants; LHP James Paxton (0-0, 0.00 ERA) does the same for the Dodgers. Winn is a 26-year-old who made his debut last year and has a career record of 1-3 and a 4.68 ERA in nine games. Paxton is a 35-year-old crafty lefty with a lifetime record of 64-38 and a 3.69 ERA in 156 games, all starts.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1937 The Reds sell Babe Herman to the Tigers. The 34 year-old outfielder, batting .300 for his new team, will appear in only 17 contests with Detroit before effectively retiring from the game, although he will return to play briefly for the war-time Dodgers in 1945.
  • 1963 Former Brooklyn Dodger Duke Snider returns to New York when the Mets purchase him from LA for $40,000. The 36 year-old outfielder, who will represent New York in the All-Star Game, will be told at the end of the season by Buzzie Bavasi, his former GM, that the Yankees had asked for him to back up Mickey Mantle before he was dealt to the team the across the river.
  • 2008 On Opening Day in Los Angeles, Juan Pierre’s 434 consecutive game streak, the longest current one in the major leagues, comes to an end when the Dodger outfielder does not play in the 3-2 victory over the Giants. New skipper Joe Torre plays Andre Ethier in left field in place of the highly paid but light-hitting fly chaser.
  • 2013 Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers’ Opening Day pitcher, hits a leadoff home run off San Francisco’s George Kontos in the bottom of the eighth inning to break up a scoreless tie in the team’s eventual 4-0 victory. LA’s 25-year-old southpaw retires the side in the next frame, completing a 4-0 complete-game shutout against the Giants at Chavez Ravine.

  1. We need more Mariachi Kelly and less Guano Kelly. Sorry, just not a big Kelly fan. To inconsistent.

      • Why. He has done nothing as a Dodger to make a difference. Except snowing AF and getting overpaid.

        • He’s a personality. He has had his moments for the Dodgers. Will never forget his pouty mouth response to the ‘Stros (nor his drilling Hanley in the ribs). His mariachi outfit in the White House. Had a nice personal interaction with him out in the pen in Nats Stadium.

          • You’ve got to be kidding. Pouty gestures. Good grief. Not the guy I want in a close game in the playoffs.

          • You asked. We all know his stats and up and down performance. He is a back end of the pen guy with a bit of flamboyance. I don’t begrudge a ball player getting a good salary.

          • He is not a back end of the bullpen guy. Not who I want to trust in a close playoff game. He needs to work more on his pitching and less on being the class clown.

  2. Snakes lose, so Dodgers will occupy first place shortly. Order restored in the universe!

  3. I’m low keep pumped to have Dinelson Lamet on the team. He was a statcast darling back in the day as a young starter. I think he could be quite good in the pen.

    • I’m trying to recall if it was his spin rate or amount a certain pitched moved or something else measurable that the statcast people loved.

  4. Ohtani is pressing. Trying to do to much to live up to the hype. Let the game come to you.

    • Of the first 6 regulars in the lineup, Ohtani has by far the worst OPS. At .670, he is 100+ points lower than Muncy, who is 5th with a .777 OPS.

      • I don’t really dislike many teams. But I don’t like the Padres and that is probably more to do with my dislike for Manny Machado.
My list of teams in order of dislike is:
        Cheating Astros,
        Yankees,
        Padres,
        Giants,
        Cardinals.

Padres and Giants alternate from year to year.

        How about you?

        • Astros
          Yanks
          Giants
          Padres?

Teams that I have a soft spot in my heart for that aren’t the Dodgers:
          Royals
          Guardians
          Rangers
          Mariners

          • I will always root for the Reds and Indians/Guardians.
            Also the Pirates and Cubs.

        • 1) Tie: Trashtros/Gnats (both cheaters)
          2) Yanquis (legacy loathing)
          3) Padres (conditional on Machado)

  5. Did anyone watch the women’s basketball playoff game with Iowa and
Caitlin Clark against LSU? Or the LPGA this weekend and Nelly Korda?
    They are fun to watch.

    • I saw the first half of the basketball game – and it was scintillating. Then my wife and I went out to our neighbours – but my son kept watching. Yay Iowa!

  6. Gameday:
Ahmed singled on soft ground ball to catcher Will Smith.

That has to be one very soft ground ball!

  7. Bottom of the order doing nothing again. 5 thru 9 are 0 for 9 with 5 SO’s. The top 4 can’t carry all the load.

  8. Rather startling that the Trashtros let an inexperienced pitcher go a full nine and over 100 pitches so early in the season.
