Game 6, 2024

Cardinals at Dodgers, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: ESPN

LHP Steven Matz (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the hill for the Cardinals and RHP Gavin Stone (0-0, 0.00 ERA) does so for the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1948 At Ebbets Field No. 2, the Dodgers play their first exhibition game at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, which will remain the team’s home for 61 years. Amidst much fanfare, including Governor Millard Caldwell throwing the ceremonial first pitch, Jackie Robinson homers in the first inning as Brooklyn beats its top farm club, the Montreal Royals, 5-4.
  • 2018 Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who goes 3-for-4 in the team’s 3-2 victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field, becomes the first American Leaguer to have multiple extra-base hits in the first three games of the season. In 2015, Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez also accomplished the feat, collecting at least two hits in each of LA’s first three contests when he compiled ten hits his first 14 at-bats of the season.

Lineups when available.

  1. Well, Stone pitching well. 78 pitches thru 5. Does he get the 6th? Offense needs to wake up.

    • A bit. There was a joke about a former Fillies pitcher – “Boozer was fine until he reached the bottom of the fifth.”

  2. Dodgers are blacked out on ESPN, but in Tacoma this is not Buehler’s day off. That game started on MLBTV at 1:35 pm.

  3. With ESPN tonight and then the Gnats for three straight, this is officially Blackout Week.

  4. Late to the party – but I was having Easter dinner with my extended family. We were uh – commemorating a different amazing comeback that happened a while ago.

  5. Another Hudson reincarnation. Just when you think he is done and out of baseball.

  6. Interesting that ESPN doesn’t have the pitch box on. Umpire union must have complained.

  7. Gameday field view is kind enough to show all the infielders gathering around the mound when there is a visit.

  8. Yesterday and today have produced enough weird plays at the expense of the Dodgers to last a season.

  9. I am struck by the 1948 date for spring training in Vero Beach. In 1947 they trained in Havana, Cuba, not wishing to expose Jackie to hostile crowds. In 1948 it was in Cuidad Trujillo, Dominican Republic, where my mother-in-law hobnobbed with the team. I have photos of her on the field standing between players that I believe are Preacher Roe and Arky Vaughan and partying with Leo Durocher and his wife. Guessing that on their way north they passed through Vero Beach and also played some games there. The season didn’t start until April 20.

    • In the mid 1960s they left Spring Training in Florida and played a two-game exhibition series with the Senators, I suppose at Griffith Park. Koufax was supposed to pitch Saturday and Drysdale Sunday, and my father kept me home on Saturday to mow the lawn. I was furious. It turned out that Alston flipped his starters, so Don pitched Saturday and Sandy on Sunday. I rode the bus in to see him and the rest of the team pitch.

      • Where were you living that you had to take the bus in?

When I lived in the District in 1990, I saw an exhibition at RFK between the Orioles and the Redbirds – despite morning snowfall. Later I managed to see a game at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, and loved the approach through historically black neighborhoods with folks socializing on their porches and sidewalks.
