Game 111, 2023

Dodgers at Padres, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA, various (see Game 108 post for channels)

RHP Tony Gonsolin (6-4, 4.11 ERA) goes for the Dodgers and RHP Seth Lugo (4-5, 3.54 ERA) does so for the Padres.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 2003 Fireballer Eric Gagne ties the single-season record for consecutive saves to start a season, established in 1995 by Jose Mesa of the Indians. The Dodger closer strikes out the Reds’ side in the ninth inning for his 38th save this season and 46th consecutive regular-season save overall.

In other baseball history, in 1972 the Baseball Hall of Fame inducts pitchers Sandy Koufax (1st year of eligibility, 86.9% of the vote), the author of four no-hitters, and three hundred game winner Early Wynn (4th year, 76.0%). Yogi Berra (2nd year, 85.6%), who retired as the AL leader for catcher putouts with 8,723 and owns more World Series Championship rings than anyone else who’s ever played the game, is also enshrined in Cooperstown.

We saw part of this during Sunday’s game; here’s the full 12-minute conversation between ESPN’s Karl Ravech, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.

  1. The Dodgers have now scored 59 runs in their last seven games (6-1), an average of 8.4 runs per game, while allowing 28 (4.0). They outscored the Padres 34-22 in this series. (8.5 to 5.5).

  2. Anywhere other than Wrigley, a Monday afternoon game feels bizarre. It’s a getaway day of sorts, but Dodgers have just a short flight to Phoenix and Pads, headed for Seattle, will stay in the same time zone.

  3. Even with all that scoring, the game came in at under three hours, 2:46 to be precise, according to the box score.

  4. A perfect day for Outman: three singles, one double and one walk. Now up to .259.

  5. San Diego really does have a nice ballpark. I wouldn’t mind having one of those straw hats.

    • I saw two Dodgers-Padres games there a few years ago. We had field level for the first game, but the grade up the steps was not that much and it was hard to see over the heads of the people in front of us. We were on the top deck the next day and we had a great view of the field and the water.

  6. Everybody is the Dodgers lineup has at least one hit and has scored at least one run. Everybody but Freeman and Outman has at least one RBI.

  7. Going, Going, Gonsolin. This guy isn’t hacking it and hasn’t for quite a while. Fifteen earned runs in his last 18 innings.

  8. I check in, and watch a walk and three hits off Gonsolin including a HR. Jinx! Maybe I should stop watching.

  9. Muncy is back in the lineup in the cleanup spot. I would have had him batting sixth or seventh until he shows he can do more than homer, strikeout or walk. (total of 192 out of 379 plate appearances). He is batting below .200 for his second straight season, but he does maintain good slugging and OPS numbers.
