Dodgers at Padres, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: ESPN
It’s a battle of deadline acquisitions this afternoon as RHP Lance Lynn (7-9, 6.32 ERA) makes his second start for the Dodgers and old friend LHP Rich Hill (7-10, 4.76 ERA) makes his first start for the Friars.
- 1981 The players approved a split-season format necessitated by the seven-week strike. The Yankees, A’s, Phillies, and Dodgers are declared the first-half champions and will be automatically qualified for the divisional series.
- 2016 Giancarlo Stanton drives a pitch thrown by Rockies starter Chad Bettis deep into the Rockpile seats, a 504-foot blast that becomes the longest round-tripper in the 21-year-old history of Coors Field. The Miami Marlins slugger’s fifth-inning solo shot in the team’s 12-6 loss surpasses the 496-footer hit in 1997 by Dodger catcher Mike Piazza off current Colorado bullpen coach Darren Holmes.

Dodgers gain ground on everybody except the Rox.
Welcome back Almonte.
Woo-HOO!!!
Good job boys.
Nice play Freddie.
Six pitch 8th. What a difference a day makes.
Mookie, Mookie, send me a run home

Well done WBBsAs

C’mon boys, playing with house money. D’Backs and Gnats both lost today.

Duck Duck Pedro
Do we need insurance runs?
Got one, even if you don’t need it
I’m still a little antsy after yesterday.
I like it when a policy pays off
Bear down, Brasier! (In fairness, he’s been pretty good since his acquisition).
Just when I think Gameday can’t get any worse, it does. Earlier it froze on the iPad, now it’s frozen on the phone as well.
Take a seat Lance, and thanks.
Barnesy’s a terror at the plate tonight.
Filling up the box score.
A bit of everything.
Sure smacked that one, but to no avail
Just an aside. When people were talking about Rosario’s defense they said it was subpar at SS. Check this out.
Rosario at SS: 303 CH, 11 E, .964 F%.
Trea Turner at SS: 398 CH, 13 E, .967 F%.
Fielding percentage alone is a very incomplete stat.
You got anything better?
Well, Wilbur… https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/outs_above_average?type=Fielder&startYear=2023&endYear=2023&split=yes&team=&range=year&min=q&pos=6&roles=&viz=hide
Thanks, Scooter.
Outs above average is a newish way to measure. Currently Turner’s at +1 and Rosario is at -15.

Well, I thought it was interesting. Not implying Rosario is a good SS. Thankfully that is not what we got him for.
SSS, but he’s played pretty well at 2B.
Trea’s off to a slow start in Filly but, other things being equal, I wish Dodgers could’ve kept him.
Lynn started out efficiently but, lately, not so much so.
85 pitches thru 5. Maybe one more inning.
Only one dinger so far.
Gameday’s getting worse – as if that were possible.
Nice catch Outman.
Dodgers have won two challenges in one game so far. That’s rare.
Winning even one seems rare.
NYC is sure spending time on these reviews, to our benefit.
Wow. Got the call. I didn’t think they would over turn it.
Challenges going Dodgers’ way today…
Dick Mountain’s debut has not gone well for the Pads so far.
Arizona and its new closer, Sewald, lost to Minnesota in the bottom of the 9th. Sewald gave up a homer on his first pitch. The Diamondbacks have now dropped 22 of their last 29 games.
Sewald was pretty good with Seattle, but Snakes have really tanked despite young talent.
Very small sample sizes, but Rosario is now hitting .320 as a Dodger and Hernandez .310.
Getting results at the deadline… https://twitter.com/CespedesBBQ/status/1688334105245532160?s=20
Giants just lost to the A’s, 8-6. Giants blew leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 6-3. How sad.
Cry me a river, scoop.
Good gnews, but you misspelled “Gnats” again.
Gnaturally.
Tatis watches Freddie’s tattoo go over the wall.
FREDDIE!!!!
Good ruling!
Melvin claims that blocking the plate rule is not applied strictly when it involves an infield ball because catcher doesn’t have adequate time to properly set up.
Next thing you know, they will enlarge the plate. Add 6 inches on the back. LOL
I detest the Busted Poseur rule – loved seeing baserunners bounce half way back to third against Scioscia – but it needs rethinking. In Berkeley slow pitch, all plays at the plate were forceouts.
If you like that sort of stuff you’ll love handegg.
Handegg’s almost as boring as soccer.
Guess hard to overturn
But taking a long time…
Yep blocking on that view!
Good look at ball, knee and hand.
Interesting discussion about new players coming in and a Dodgers “mystique” similar to the Yankees. Put on the Dodgers uniform, play at Dodger Stadium, get a sense of confidence from management (“confianza,” Edgar Martinez said, talking about Rosario and Hernandez).
Ain’t worked so well for Yanquis lately.
I guess, but Reddick and Granderson say hello.
Granderson at least had a good attitude.
Rosario flicks one out!
So far, an unexpected star, but ESPN doesn’t even condescend to show us the highlights on Gameday.
I’m old enough to remember when ESPN was enjoyable, but now it only means Blackout Sunday.
Two Korean-born players in SD’s starting lineup. That has to be a little unusual.
