Game 105, 2023

Athletics at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSCA, SPNLA

Oakland hasn’t yet named its starter, while the Dodgers hand the ball to the newly-acquired RHP Lance Lynn (6-9, 6.47 ERA).

Update: LHP Ken Waldichuk (2-6, 6.38 ERA) will start for the A’s.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1906 After pitching 10 2/3 innings of no-hit ball, Harry McIntire yields a single to Pirates second baseman Claude Ritchey. The Dodgers and McIntire lose the game in the 13th on an unearned run, 1-0.
  • 1924 Dazzy Vance strikes out seven consecutive batters to establish a major league record when the Brooklyn Robins defeat the Cubs at Ebbets Field, 4-0. The future Hall of Famer, who will compile a 28-6 record for the Brooks this season, will lead the National League in strikeouts with 262.
  • 1957 Gil Hodges, in a 12-3 win over the Cubs, hits his 13th and last career grand slam in Brooklyn Dodger history. The first baseman’s bases-loaded shot off Dick Littlefield establishes a new National League record, previously shared by Rogers Hornsby and Ralph Kiner.
  • 2011 After popping out in a pinch-hitting appearance, Craig Counsell remains without a hit in his last 45 at-bats, tying the longest single-season hitless streak by a position player in history, established by Brooklyn backstop Bill Bergen in 1909. The major league record is 0-for-70, established in 1970 by Bob Buhl, a pitcher who toiled with the Braves and Cubs that season. Counsell and Bergen’s record for position players has since been surpassed by the Orioles’ Chris Davis, who got it up to 54 straight hitless ABs in 2019 before getting a hit on April 13.
  • 2015 Clayton Kershaw strikes out Mike Trout looking with a wicked curveball, marking the first time that reigning MVPs have faced one another in a major league game. The interleague contest between the two LA teams ends with the Dodgers southpaw keeping the Angels outfielder 0-for-3 while hurling eight innings in the team’s 3-1 victory over the Halos at Chavez Ravine.

Lineups when available.

Late breaking news:

I don’t understand that move at all. The Dodgers are in need of starting pitchers, not cash.

  1. Kike’ hit that double against a righty. Does it count toward the Dodgers being stronger against lefties?

  2. Dodgers need to sweep the A’s in order to finish with a meager 5-4 winning home stand.

  3. Lynn averaging 1.4 homers per start this year. He was well above average tonight. Showing off for his new team I suppose. Lol

  4. Hard to tell if Lynn is pitching well or if he is just pitching well against the A’s.

  5. Wow. 7 pitch inning for Lynn. Another time when the half inning is over before the MLB Audio starts their play by play.

  6. This month starts with the A’s – MLB’s worst team – and ends with the start of a series with the Braves – MLB’s best team. Should be fun to see how this new look team does.

  7. Those of you with video – are there many in the seats wearing green “sell” shirts?

  8. Thoughtful of the Snakes to swat the Gnats last night, though it took them longer than it should have. Phoenix has their best starter going tonight at Software Stadium.

  9. Tonight, unfortunately, is a blackout – though I do not want the A’s going to Vegas, which would be a disaster.

  10. Gonna be fun watching the AL West race. Rangers get Scherzer, Astros get Verlander. I hope the Rangers win the west.

    • Back in the day for sure. Not so much with everyone making the playoffs. Angels making a run is something to watch, though.

      • And to hope for, in my case. I was there at the beginning and saw a game when they played that first season at Wrigley Field (LA). Trout deserves a World Series shot.

      • I loathe the new playoff format. If anything, they should be reducing the number of teams in the post-season.

        • I hear you. Saw the Brewers tonight and thought “this is a team that would qualify for the playoffs!?”

          • Now living on the West Coast your comment caught me off guard. It’s bright daylight in my Washington and you have already been to and seen a game on the East Coast.

  11. Well, the trade deadline has come and gone. We don’t have to listen to any more ludicrous trade proposals. Dodgers didn’t make any big impact moves. Gonna need Kersh to come back strong and Urias and Gonsolin to turn things around.

    • Might hope that at least one of the youngin’s matures quickly. Lance should be better that Thor as well.

      • Did you notice that Syndergaard promptly went 5 1/3 pretty good innings for the Guardians in his first start for them? Maybe he needed the American League.

        • Smoke and mirrors? Zero strikeouts and only 2 swing and misses in five innings. Mike P. says in the 8 years of Statcast for a pitcher facing at least 20 batters, there has never been a larger gap between wOBP allowed and expected wOBP. Balls were findIng leather at an historical rate.

      • I would like to see the Dodgers bring up Fedducia and move on from Barnes. Also, sit Muncy down against lefties.

        • I guess, but fairly marginal moves on the offense side, which really hasn’t been a problem. If pitching is the problem might want to have a familiar face behind the plate every five days. Max traditionally doesn’t have big splits, so probably better to have him work it out.
