Game 117, 2021

Dodgers at Mets, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA, WPIX

RHP Walker Buehler (12-2, 2.13 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and RHP Taijuan Walker (7-7, 3.89 ERA) takes the mound for Mets.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1919 In a total of two hours and seventeen minutes, the Dodgers and Cubs split a doubleheader. In the opener, the Cubs blank Brooklyn 2-0, in one hour and ten minutes, and in the nightcap, it takes the Dodgers one hour and seven minutes to shut out Chicago, 1-0.
  • 1932 Brooklyn’s 10-inning, 2-1 victory over the Giants at the Polo Grounds makes reliever John Quinn, at the age of 49, the oldest player to win a major league game. Johnny Frederick, who will have a total of only six home runs during the entire season, hits a ninth inning game-tying homer off Carl Hubbell, his fourth round-tripper as a pinch hitter, establishing a new major-league record.

Also, in 2015 the Padres’ Matt Kemp hits a ninth-inning triple to complete the cycle, making him the first player in the 35-year history of the franchise to accomplish the feat. The San Diego outfielder’s home run in the first, single in the third, and double in the seventh contribute to the team’s 9-5 victory over Colorado at Coors Field.

    • Couldn’t happen to a better team.
      Except for San Fran.
      And Houston.
Oh and New York Yanks. And maybe a few others.
      But definitely the Pads also.

  1. Haven’t been around for the last few games. Interesting hearing the “Joe Davis has a cold” version of his announcing.

  2. Any time Bobo Holloman and the St. Louis Browns get mentioned it is a fun night in baseball.

  3. Just out of Nats game, where the Braves lapped them six times. Seems that Walker did his part.

  4. Joe was saying Buehler hasn’t lost when the Dodgers have scored in his games. He has only lost when they got 0 runs (including when they got no-hit by the Cubs).

  5. Meanwhile, in Arizona, the Padres are shriveling in the heat 5-0 Snakes in the first.

  6. Listening while exercising and now getting ready for yet another Leo son’s birthday party. Go Dodgers!!’n

  7. I am off shortly before game time today to umpire an adult hard ball doubleheader, so I am hoping the fine group on this site will coax the Dodgers to another victory. I am taping the game and will be watching it quite late. Best to all.

    • Yes, we miss that Grant (for the moment, at least). Mike, though, appears to have overlooked the BALCO™ Flaxseed factor. When declining players in their mid-thirties have a sudden and simultaneous resurgence…
