A plea for common-sense marketing

Dear Major League Baseball,

In order to build audience with younger fans, wouldn’t it make sense to at least have World Series games on the weekends be played in the daylight? Last night’s game started at 7:00pm Central Time and ended four hours later just after 11:00pm local time. How many kids, particularly on the East Coast, were still up and watching when Albert Pujols hit his record-tying third home run of the game?

Yes, yes, “it would compete with college football on Saturday afternoons, and Fox as our business partner also has contracts for the NFL on Sunday afternoons” and blah blah blah. Guess what? My basic cable package gives me the opportunity to watch five college football games simultaneously; I’m capable of choosing which one I want to watch. The same can be said of fans who’d like to see a World Series game played during the day.

Besides, baseball began as a daytime sport. It wasn’t till the 1930s that anybody thought of putting lights up around the fields. It was meant to be played while the sun’s out.
