Dodgers at Phillies, 10:05AM PT, TV: SPNLA, MLBN
Zack Greinke (10-2, 1.41 ERA) goes back to the hill for the Dodgers. The last time he faced the Phillies was July 9 when he went 8 innings and gave up 1 hit to them, striking out 8 and walking none. His opposition will be David Buchanan (2-5, 6.44 ERA), who pitched better than that record indicates in July. He got his two wins last month in 18 2/3 innings in which he gave up 7 runs, struck out 11 and walked only 3.
Lineup when available.
NPUT
Good comment elsewhere on how Greinke showed his anger after his awful first inning Thursday–
“He used a blunt weapon to smash a projectile 400 feet, threw the weapon, and ran around in a circle.”
Is he a Scot???
He was not wearing a kilt, if that means anything.
I was thinking more of tossing the caber.
Does kinda remind you of Al Hrabosky, “The Mad Hungarian,” with that evil stare.
The Gnats are fragile, and Pagán is the new Aaron Rowand:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/giants/2015/08/06/extra-baggs-giants-begin-a-painfully-tough-stretch-bochy-has-a-big-pagan-problem-leake-update-etc/#more-20929
“His on-base percentage is down to .294. He is completely bereft of power – no home runs in 669 at-bats. He might be the worst defensive center fielder in the league.”
Schadenfreude for breakfast? I prefer black coffee, sympathy for the unfortunate, and a silent prayer that I don’t receive the same…
Trust me, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.
Measured by runs saved (BR) at -17, he is currently the worst player on defense in the NL (ranked 617)!
Gnats lose, lead back to three games.
and I noticed Leake is already injured and will miss at least a start
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13390537/mike-leake-san-francisco-giants-miss-start
Woo-HOO!!!
at least it only took him 7 pitches in the end – much less than last night 🙂
Not the most artful seven pitches, though.
Not an artful Dodger?
Well, he did dodge a bullet to end the game.
Ha, my year 4 class had just watched Oliver as part of our unit at school
Think Peralta is gone. I mean, what situation would Donnie bring him in at this point besides Dodgers being down four runs?
I’d replace him with Bolsinger, who could be the long man in the bullpen and who pitched fairly well for us.
Ballslinger left the game injured yesterday, otherwise yes. Frias as well left after an inning after feeling something.
Kenley gets an efficient seven-pitch save.
thank goodness for that
“And, that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you guard the lines in the late innings with runners on base.”
I believe it was a foul ball, though.
!!!!!
Agon to the rescue!
Jansen has been generally ineffective this season when brought in with men on base. Why hasn’t Mattingly learned that? Peralta has been generally ineffective. Period.
Closers close. No matter how much trouble they have with men on, they close.
It’s an idiotic mindset, but that’s the way baseball management thinks.
Leave average inherited runners scoring in 27%. Dodgers relievers at 30% and Kenley at a whopping 43%.
my goodness
Mercy!
Geez. going to be a long outing no matter what the outcome.
So much for Kenley’s day off. Would have loved to have him fresh for the filibustero series.
enough of the pretenders, now over to the professional
Peralta in. Note that a grand salami just ties.
For Peralta, an eight-run lead should qualify as a save situation.
…and the glove on the other hand.
Dre now doing it with the glove.
Been a wild one (left after the second and now checking back in).
Wow, I’ve only just woken up over here, looking forward to seeing highlights of this one
Joc needs hits for morale, I’d think.
Claude Osteen was the last Dodger pitcher to score three runs in a game until Zack today. So says Steiner.
Maybe Steiner’s not always wrong, but this could be a first.
Well, they do have a statistician doing the research. Presumably he or she passed the correct data along to him. 😉
Maybe, but do you have confidence that Steiner can read them correctly?
Yeah, I think so. Charlie’s heart’s in the right place, after all. If he got it wrong he’d correct it.
His heart’s not the problem. It’s his brain(lessness).
Now let’s hope that getting from the 6th inning to the 9th, on the assumption that Greinke is done for the day, is not A Bridge Too Far.
And the Dodgers’ run count has gone up to nine!
Meanwhile, Greinke’s batting average has increased from .170 to .220 today.
He is now outhitting Rollins.
Greinke’s ERA has gone up today from 1.41 to 1.74, still easily the best among qualifiers in MLB.
This game would nicely fit into my normal expectations if we simply say the first inning never happened.
On pace for a neat and tidy 21-18 Dodger victory.
But what was the spread?
Ha! 🙂
If Greinke pitches 2 more innings and no more runs are scored in this game, Zach will have both the win and the game winning hit/RBI.
Not sure if either of the two requirements are very likely however.
69 pitches thru 3 innings. Very un-Zack like.
Agreed.
“There’s something happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear” — Buffalo Springfield
Gameday showed In Play – Out(s) initially on Browns RBI single. Unfortunately it was wrong.
Woot!
Guy can’t pitch or field, but he sure can hit. 😉
Ha! Great comment. 🙂
Greinke revenge!
Greinke put his frustration into that one!
Have to sign off for a bit, but GO BLUE!
Even the pitchers are pounding the ball today.
CC looked safe. (maybe not seeing the replay).
I agree. But no challenge.
I thought it was worth a challenge at least.
With a run at stake, but Davy might have told them no use.
It’s like Little League: Everybody hits.
Everybody walks in LL.
Ha – that’s true!
Everybody kicks the ball around the IF.
Hopefully just for us.
Dre coming up big all over the place.
One of those games. Still just one out in the second!
AGon picking up some more RBI’s.
So great that our guys could pick up Zack.
AGon!!!!
There we go!
I’m glad this is not a 4 games series.
I’d gladly trade one of the upcoming games against the Pirates for another one against the fillies.
These games are not exactly a walk in the park, guaranteed win for the Dodgers.
If I get to pick my poison.
What teams are these? 8 runs in the first inning?
Zack is going to have to go 35 innings today to protect his ERA…
If nothing else, we know the Dodgers can at least get runners on base.
Okay, Zack. Start over.
Let;s just win this thing somehow and get the heck out of Philly,
Oh shoot. Not at all what I expected today.
Greinke is regressing to the mean a bit, me thinks.
But his mean is still pretty good.
Oh boy. It would be Howard with the bases loaded.
Big K guy, though.
Zach in a hole.
Intereting article on Greinke in the issue of Sports Illustrated with Pete Carroll on the cover.
Also – nice article on MLB.com about Chad Billingsly and his wife overcoming cancer.
Right here on Phillies.com.
Also on the Dodgers page as well.
Joc robbed, but at least he put the bat on it.
Joc robbed. (nice to see him get some wood on the ball).
Or, what you said!
I love these early runs for the Dodgers.
Wow, great slide!
Wow, Dre avoiding the tag.
Finally, an RBI!
Dre doing it!
Baserunning blunder notwithstanding, I’d rather have seen Puig starting over Crawford. Yasiel homered, singled and walked yesterday. Small samples for both vs. Buchanan: Puig 1-for-2, Crawford 0-for-2.
WHAT DO I KNOW?
I was mid-agreeing with you when CC got the hit. So I deleted.
Don’t mind a little spanking for ignoring Rollins’ signal.
It’s great to start the morning with Dodger baseball, but it’s awful to hear Steiner’s voice.
