This is Game Two of a doubleheader.
Dodgers at Rockies, 5:40 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet RM, SPNLA
RHP Bobby Miller (10-4, 3.97 ERA) climbs the Coors Field mound for the Dodgers. The Rockies hadn’t named a starter as of 2030 HST Monday night.
Today in baseball history:
- 1954 With the Yankees eight games behind Cleveland on the last day of the season, Casey Stengel fields a lineup of familiar faces in unfamiliar places in an 8-6 loss to the A’s at the ballpark in the Bronx. In his only career game at third base, Yogi Berra handles two chances without a miscue, shortstop Mickey Mantle flawlessly fields eight grounders, and first baseman Bill Skowron makes just one error in his eight opportunities playing at second.
- 1961 At Yankee Stadium, Roger Maris ties Babe Ruth’s 34-year-old single-season record with his 60th home run of the year, a high drive down the right-field line off on a curveball thrown by Orioles right-hander Jack Fisher. The slugger’s homer comes in the 159th game of the expanded season, keeping Ruth as the single-season home run leader according to Commissioner Ford Frick, who ruled for the mark to be shared or broken, the historic round-tripper had to come in the first 154 games of the season.

NPUT
C’mon Mariners… Kick the crap out of the cheaters.
Great pitching by Pepiot and Miller, particularly at Coors Field.
Bobby Miller. 9 K’s and no walks. 7 strong innings.
Willy is in a terrible funk.
Needs a Mark Grace slump buster.
Woo-HOO!!!’
Willy is struggling big time.
Should he still be batting third?
No. Needs to get more rest.
He’s getting rest – with division clinched, he’s only playing every other day.
Then he needs to bat lower in the order. Less pressure.
Agreed. Let Barnes start three of the last six. There are then five or six days off before the NLCS, which has many days off.
Ah-Ooh!! I wonder what was in the between game meal.
Have a game Munce..
And Outman…
JO33… Woot!!
#58. Go Freddie.
Atta boy Joe.
Should be it for Miller. Nice job.
Oh James.
Shoulda carved that up into doubles, Freddie.
Hey, Dodgers finally get a bad call go their way.
Davis was funny in the first game after Pepiot gave up the home run. Apparently with 3 balls on the hitter, Pepiot threw ball 4 twice but the pitches were called strikes. Davis said it wasn’t Pepiot’s fault. He walked him twice before giving up the home run pitch.
Classic. Kind of like Big D after Koufax’s 3rd no hitter.
Don Drysdale, who lost 1-0 in 11 innings the night before, was not traveling with the team. When he heard the announcer reporting that Koufax had pitched his third no-hitter, Drysdale asked impatiently, “But did he win?”
Wong having a good game.
He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook’s
Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein
Ah-Hoo.
Born in Hawaii
Maybe he likes Chinese cuisine.
Spam and pineapple
Don’t knock it until you’ve fried it. I happen to like it. Almost as good as fried Bologna.
Fried, both of ’em.
He’s a Hawai’i son, born in Hilo. He played 3 years at the U of Hawai’i and was so good they retired his uniform number.
Kolten Wong’s parents are Kaha Wong and Keala Wong. He comes from Hilo, Hawaii, and has familial roots that include Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, and Portuguese descent. Tragically, Kolten’s mother, Keala, passed away from cancer on December 19, 2013.
Note Chinese is in there.
Observaçao português…
Hawai’i is about as polyglot as you can find in the US, other than the big cities.
Need a Freddie double. You know that is the only reason he is playing most of these last few meaningless games.
Miller at just 49 pitches through four.
Now that is one heck of a DP.
Very fine DP there.
Dodgers starting rotation could be looking good for next year. Miller and Pepiot should be in the rotation. Buehler back. May could be back after the All Star break. I hope Kersh comes back.
Batting around is always good.
Good start!
And getting better…
