Rockies at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet-RM, SPNLA
Two lefties battle in a day game today as the Rockies send LHP Kyle Freeland (4-12, 4.84 ERA) to the hill to face the Dodgers’ LHP Julio Urías (9-6, 4.39 ERA).
- 1910 In a game which features each team having 38 at-bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, 2 errors, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, 1 hit batsman, and 1 passed ball, the Pirates and the Superbas (later to be known as the Dodgers) play to what else – an 8-8 tie.
- 1951 Any fan who shows up with a musical instrument during the Dodgers’ Musical Depreciation Night is admitted free to the Ebbets Field contest against Boston. With an assortment of trumpets, trombones, zithers, tubas, accordions, bugles, flutes, various type of drums, violins, mandolins, assorted horns, a glockenspiel, a washboard, and a piano, 2,426 fans, which is about 10% of the total crowd, take advantage of the team’s unusual promotion.
- 1965 Dean Chance establishes an American League record when he fans to extend his streak to 11 consecutive plate appearances with a strikeout. The Angels’ right-hander falls one shy of the major league mark set by Sandy Koufax, who whiffed in 12 consecutive plate appearances in 1955.
- 1982 At Chavez Ravine, Dodger second baseman Steve Sax steals his 41st base to set a franchise record for rookies when he swipes second base in LA’s 6-1 victory over San Francisco. The eventual National League Rookie of the Year, the fourth consecutive Dodger to win the award, will extend the record to 49.
- 2006 LA’s Greg Maddux and SF’s Jason Schmidt hook up in a classic West Coast pitcher’s duel, reminiscent of match-ups of Koufax and Marichal, as the Dodgers beat the Giants, 1-0, thanks to Russell Martin’s 10th inning walk-off home run. When Giants slugger Barry Bonds lines into a double play in the first inning, it marks the only time in baseball history a 300 game winner pitches to a batter with over 700 homers.
- 2007 For the first time in 1,303 games, Nomar Garciaparra of the Dodgers is ejected from a game. The 12-year veteran infielder, who is tossed by home plate umpire Tom Hallion for arguing a called third strike in the fourth inning, is restrained by first base coach Mariano Duncan when he continues to shout and points his bat toward the umpire.

Hey, WBBsAs, an ostensibly Peruvian restaurant just opened up in Honolulu. Is this standard chow?
https://mimisperuviancuisine.com/menu
I’d try the chupe de camarones, but most of the menu sounds good to me. Best cuisine in the Americas, but ask them for ají de gallina (my favorite Peruvian dish, oddly absent from this menu).

Addendum to the Koufax-Chance strikeout link from above.: After fanning in all 12 of his plate appearances in 1955, Koufax’ first AB in 1956 came in June. He drew a walk, grounded out to third (putting the ball in play for the first time in his career), struck out, and, remarkably, walked again. It was one of only six times in his 12-year career that he drew two walks in a game — he never drew more — and the second time didn’t come until 1961.
Koufax career batting: 2 HR, 28 RBI, .097 BA. 776 PA, 386 SO, 43 BB.
He was no Drysdale at the plate.
I recall seeing Sandy hit a game-winning homer off Spahn in Milwaukee (on TV).
Kike should not be playing the infield. Taylor is a better infielder. Kike can play the outfield..
Rats!! Kike bad throw costs us two.
Woo-Hoo!!! A day at the beach – came home to read about the sweep!
Just now, in Seattle, Orioles CF robbed a HR that would’ve tied the game. On the very next pitch, M’s rookie Canzone tied it up.
Canzone is from Cleveland and went to Ohio State. Go Bucks!!
Canzone or calzone?
That same O’s CF (Mullins) hit a game winning two run dinger the next inning.
D’Backs whip the Puds, 5-4. I love when the Puds lose. Will be awesome if they don’t make the playoffs..
Wahoo!
SA-WEEP!!!
Freddie needs a hit. Go Freddie.
Attagojas!
A’s led the Nationals 7-2 after 8 1/2 innings only for Washington to score six runs, four of them with two outs, with an error playing a key role. Nationals won, 8-7.
Same thing happened to the Yanquis.
I feel bad for the A’s but not for the Yanks.
I kind of feel bad for the Rockies.
Their owner’s not quite so bad as the A’s Fisher.
John Fisher gets the L.
Gnats have just blown a 1-0 lead after having two out and nobody on in the ninth.
Tying run scored when the Rangers sent Martinez from second on a stolen base attempt. Duran hit a grounder to the hole and shortstop Crawford backhanded it but his somewhat awkward throw to first was late and Martinez scored easily without a throw being made home.
Go-ahead run scores when Gnats closer Doval balks it in.
Doval is not used to pitching in two innings, I expect.
Doval rhymes with balk.
Fine productive AB by Rojas.
Be nice to score here.
Nice. Want more.
Very nice!

Sac infield fly!
Ha, although there was no advancement on a tag up
??
Ah, thanks.
A ribbie in the scorebook, so he has three on the day.
Scoop, have you seen this? https://www.sfgate.com/centralcoast/article/california-wild-turkey-survives-arrow-impaling-18289675.php
Thanks. Yes, there was a front-page article about this in The Carmel Pine Cone last week. It’s remarkable that the bird survived. Wild turkeys are frequent visitors to our yard. They go after our vegetables. I chased a family out today, but shooting one? Who would do that?
We have them in Oakland as well, and they can get pretty aggressive. I’ve known them to attack cyclists (who, of course, would not be carrying bows and arrows to defend themselves).
Must be a tougher brand of birds in Oakland. I have heard of no attacks here.
When walking the dogs, we give them a wide berth.
Pen’s an arm short today. https://twitter.com/ericstephen/status/1690819193720254464?s=20
Once a master bedroom, now slowly becoming a library. Those boxes contain books, CDs and vinyl records. On the right is another box frame similar to that on the left. It ain’t gonna hold all of ’em either. Back shelving is going to have more shelves slotted in.

It’s shaping up nicely.
27 runs in one day: In sweeping a DH in New York yesterday, the Braves beat the Mets 21-3 and then 6-0.
I can’t say I feel bad for Steven A. Cohen.
Nor I.
Glad to see Roberts dropped Muncy in the lineup today against a lefty. Muncy’s slash against southpaws this season: .122/.275/.367/.642 in 98 ABs. His BAbip vs. lefties is .061, with 8 HRs and 4 singles, 17 walks and 25 Ks.
I would like to see Muncy takes his walks vs lefties to the 9th spot or said another way, take his .122 average against lefties to the bench.
As he did in this AB?
Might my insult get partial credit ?
Yes, in my (score)book.
Such extreme splits are not typical for Max in his career.
