Game 107, 2023

Athletics at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSCA, SPNLA

LHP JP Sears (2-7, 4.09 ERA) pi8tches for the A’s this evening. He’ll face the Dodgers’ LHP Julio Urías (7-6, 4.98 ERA).

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1959 In the second All-Star Game played this summer, Yogi Berra’s two-run home run off Dodgers right-hander Don Drysdale in the third inning at the LA Memorial Coliseum proves to be the difference in the American League’s 5-3 victory over the Senior Circuit. The home run will be the last one hit by a Bronx Bomber in a Mid-Summer Classic game for 41 years until Derek Jeter goes deep in 2001.
  • 1995 Making his first start for the Rockies since being acquired from the Mets, Brett Saberhagen gives up 13 hits and walks three batters, but gets the win in the team’s 9-4 win over the Dodgers. The sellout crowd gives their new hurler an enthusiastic standing ovation when he departs the game with one out in the seventh inning.
  • 1997 Jeromy Burnitz, coming off the bench in the Brewers’ 6-5 loss to Seattle at County Stadium, homers as a pinch hitter for the second consecutive time, tying an American League record. The major league mark for consecutive pinch-hit appearances with a home run is three, shared by Lee Lacy (Dodgers – May 2, 6, and 17, 1978) and Del Unser (Phillies – June 30, July 5 and 10, 1979).
  • 2013 The first-place Dodgers set a franchise record, winning their 13th consecutive game on the road with their 3-0 victory over the Cubs in Chicago. The Giants established the National League mark in 1916 when the team won 17 straight games away from the Polo Grounds.

Lineups when available.

Baseball in Bhutan? Is there any place even flat enough for a field? Barely, but the kids apparently love the game anyway.

    • Symptoms of Abnormal Skin Shedding in Snakes

  1. Not that I have necessarily been missed, but I haven’t posted lately because of major computer problems — I had to buy a new iMac over the weekend — and because I have been taping the Dodgers-A’s games on the A’s TV network and watching them in the late evening. I am impressed by the A’s TV broadcasters. They are knowledgeable, fair and not homers.

    • Every once in a while I like to listen to the opposing team’s announcers. They are mostly good but sometimes boring. I like to know what is said about the Dodger players.

I’ve missed you even though for the last few years I have been more in and out than full time.

I am not liking Outman not being in the lineup today. Outman hits lefties well, better than does Muncy who is playing today.

  2. We will be playing a significantly better team this weekend in San Diego in front of fans who hate the Dodgers.

  3. I’m caught up on my tape-delay watching, and I didn’t want to miss the party that you all are enjoying. The A’s do so many things wrong, it is sad to watch them (which few fans do in Oakland). Missing a cutoff man, booting a routine grounder, throwing the ball away. And the impending move to Las Vegas. The fans and the city are being very poorly served by the owner. I remember the A’s in their heyday. I covered the playoffs and World Series, 1972-1974. Those were the days, my friends. This is sad and not good for baseball. But I will happily take the sweep, if that’s how it ends up.

    • I can’t believe we got him for Syndergaard. Could be one of AF’s best trades ever.

  4. Buckle up Dodger faithful.. Seat backs and tray tables in their upright positions. We may be experiencing some turbulance..

  5. Seems to me that the Dodgers should bat Muncy 9th. With his propensity to walk and good OBP it would put him on for Betts and Friedman.

      • I played softball in pickup games with and against his sons at Codornices Park in Berkeley. Steve, the older one, was a jerk, but his younger brother Scott was a nice guy. Both had tons of power, but Steve was an awful defensive player who insisted on SS.

        • Great numbers in the Dodger minors starting at age 18 in 1952, but stuck behind Hodges. Traded to the O’s and first full MLB season at age 26 he was an All Star. Nine year career OPS + 136. Had five grand salamis in 1961 (3rd in MVP voting behind Maris and Mantle).

  6. Ok Julio…I am I remembering correctly that a few years ago they used an opener with Julio because his first inning blues had gotten so bad?

  7. Athletics (30-79)
    Dodgers (61-45)

    SP JP Sears L
    2-7 4.09 ERA
    SP Julio Urias L
    7-6 4.98 ERA

    Lineup:
    RF Mookie Betts R
    1B F. Freeman L
    DH Will Smith R
    2B Amed Rosario R
    3B Max Muncy L
    LF Chris Taylor R
    CF E. Hernandez R
    SS Miguel Rojas R
    C A. Barnes R

    • I think I would move Taylor to 3B, Kike to LF, put Outman in CF, and sit Muncy against the lefty. JMO.
