Game 88, 2023

Angels at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: Bally Sports West, SPNLA

The Angels’ RHP Griffin Canning (6-3, 4.29 ERA) faces the Dodgers’ RHP Tony Gonsolin (4-3, 3.69 ERA).

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1953 The Dodgers set a major league mark for the most consecutive games with a home run by a team with at least one round-tripper in their 24 contests. Brooklyn starter Preacher Roe hits the record-breaking homer with a third-inning blast in the team’s 9-5 victory over Pittsburgh at Forbes Field. (Note: this record has been broken by seven teams since then, most recently in 2019 by the NY Yankees, who did it in 31 straight games ending July 1)
  • 1998 Jeff Shaw becomes the first player to participate in an All-Star Game wearing a uniform for a team he hasn’t yet played for when he works an inning, allowing three hits and a run pitching for the National League squad before appearing in a regular season game for the Dodgers. The 32 year-old closer, who posted a 1.81 ERA along with 23 saves in the first half of the season for the Reds, was traded three days ago by Cincinnati to Los Angeles for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes.
  • 2004 Kazuhisa Ishii tosses a one-hitter in the Dodgers’ 11-0 defeat of Arizona. The 30 year-old Japanese southpaw retires the first 12 batters he faces before issuing a leadoff walk to Luis Gonzalez, which is followed with a single by Shea Hillenbrand, but then the left-hander proceeds to mow down 15 consecutive D-Backs to finish his masterpiece.

Lineups when available.

  1. Mookie…..
.331 average (39 for 118) and 1.072 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 31 games at second base and shortstop and a 243 average (51 for 210) and .864 OPS in 53 games in right field.

Need to keep Mookie on the infield. Send Vargas to OKC for a reset.

  2. Snakes bite Bucs, but Rox crush Gnats. Mutts and Pads tied in ninth, but NY blows a golden opportunity.

  3. Rox have taken a 2-0 lead over Gnats and old friend Chicken Strip at Software Stadium in the first. On the downside, Snakes have taken a 4-0 lead over Bucs in the third.

  4. A friend of mine just texted me from generic telephone company ballpark. He estimates that the real attendance at the Giants’ game tonight no more than 20,000.

  5. Mookie best Dodgers home run hitter pound for pound since the Toy Cannon.

    • And he seems to be a genuine nice guy. Note his great rapport with opponents.

    • Vargas can use a reset. It will do him more good to get consistent AB’s at OKC than sporadic AB’s in LA.

    • Taking advantage of Mookie’s versatility, they don’t have to just hand second over to another rookie, Busch, full time. When is CT3 back?

    • Adell was always the next big thing. Reminds me of the tag applied to Brazil as always being the country of the future.

  6. Cody had another big day, including an upper-decker at Yanqui Stadium, and is now hitting .303 with an .861 OPS.
