Game 78, 2023

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:40 PM PDT, TV: ATTSportsNet-RM, SPNLA

LHP Clayton Kershaw (9-4, 2.72 ERA) pitches for the visiting Dodgers and RHP Connor Seabold (1-3, 5.88 ERA) pitches for the home team.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1939 In front of 2,457 fans at Braves Field, the Dodgers, with Whit Wyatt pitching the first 16 frames, and Boston plays 23 innings in a game that ends in a 2-2 tie when plate umpire Babe Pinelli called the five-hour and 15-minute contest at 8:15 pm due to darkness. The same teams at the same field played 26 innings to a 1-1 tie in 1920.
  • 1940 To honor the lyricist of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, the Dodgers celebrate Jack Norworth Day at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field. The songwriter and his partner Albert Von Tilzer, who wrote the music, had never seen a game when they created the song in 1908.

  • 1980 Dodger southpaw Jerry Reuss, facing only 28 batters, no-hits the Giants at Candlestick Park, 8-0. Shortstop Bill Russell’s errant throw on Jack Clark’s grounder with two outs in the first inning deprives the 31 year-old left-hander from tossing a perfect game.
  • 2011 Citing MLB refusal to sign off on a transaction that would provide the team with $385 million, the Dodgers file for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court. Although there will be no disruption to the day-to-day status of the franchise, the Chapter 11 financing permits the Dodgers to use $150 million for daily operations and gives owner Frank McCourt time to seek a media deal that will ensure the club’s long-term financial stability.

  1. That’s not helpful for a bullpen game tomorrow having to bring in EP tonight.

  2. Sliding into first is stupid, in almost all cases. You should only do it to avoid a tag.

  3. Behind a somewhat shaky start by old friend Rich Hill, the Yinzers lead the Pads 9-4 in the seventh. Dave’s fellow Canadians, though, have been flailing against the Gnats in the clutch and trail 1-0 in the eighth despite golden opportunities.

  4. Kershaw felt something which caused him to leave the game after the 6th.

“I just didn’t feel great overall. That last inning kind of got to me. … I just needed to come out there. … It’s just something where I was trying to do the right thing. I think I did. … We’ll kind of see tomorrow. … For right now, I don’t think it’s too serious. I don’t think I’ll miss a start. Let me get to tomorrow and figure everything out. I’m not trying to be sneaky.”

  5. Bickford pitching like a guy who has been asked to close down a 5 run lead in the 9th inning but is not fully comfortable doing it.

  6. RBI – just realized the Dodger pitching never gave us the opportunity to get a Jumbo Jack! They never got 10 strikeouts in the games we saw.

  7. If JD hits another HR he will pass Kershaw as the player of the night. (Because I am apparently the decider of such awards.)

  8. Martinez is going to feel real good after the game tonight with two home runs and impressive number 300. Meanwhile Outman with two singles will be feeling good himself.

  9. Surprised they aren’t going longer with Kershaw. One more inning at least.

      • Yeah, I think it is Kershaw himself who decides how long he goes and this has been the case for at least 5-6 years. Guessing that mile-high pitches count more than sea level pitches.

  10. As I remember, Rojas made a diving play on a hard hit ground ball to protect an interesting for Kershaw. Hanley Ramirez later had an error to spoil the perfecto.

    • Interesting that Ramirez blew the perfecto for Kersh and Russel blew a perfecto for Reuss.

    • Scrub Jays lost – they had plenty of opportunities and did nothing with them. Devil Rays mounting a rally.

Pads lost ugly to the Yinzers.

  11. Dang. I was hoping Kershaw would have a real run towards a perfecto. Unreasonable but still…

  12. RBI and Dave, did you guys help Scoop get his interest in the Dodgers ramped back up?

    • He is still interested in the Dodgers. I just think he is just spending a bit less time visiting here at Elysian Fields.

  13. 48 pitches through 4 is great for Kershaw. Not many K’s but that’s alright.
And nice play(s) by Rojas to keep things clean.

    • FO is pretty much committed to the Vargas thing. Busch would have had to been doing much, much better for him to stick, whereas he was not even doing as well as Vargas.

  14. I had the opportunity to attend Reuss’s no-no at Candlestick but, unfortunately, I passed on it.
