Game 76, 2023

Astros at Dodgers, 4:15 PM PDT, TV: Fox

RHP Ronel Bianco (1-0, 4.66 ERA) takes the hill for the Astros and RHP Bobby Miller (3-1, 2.83 ERA) does so for the Dodgers.

From the Dodgers’ celebration of The Infield this weekend:

Los Angeles, CA – June 23: Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Friday, June 23, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. (Jon SooHoo/Los Angeles Dodgers)

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1947 At Forbes Field, Jackie Robinson steals home in the Dodgers’ 4-2 victory over the Pirates. It is the Brooklyn infielder’s first theft of the dish, something the rookie will accomplish 19 times during his ten-year career.
  • 2018 The Dodgers tie a National League record, last accomplished by the 2006 Braves, when the team socks seven solo shots, dealing the Mets a crushing 8-7 loss at Citi Field. Former New York infielder Justin Turner delivers the decisive dinger in the top of the twelfth inning to complete the series sweep and extend the team’s consecutive win streak over the Amazins to twelve straight victories.
  • 2021 At Dodger Stadium, Cubs starter Zach Davies tosses six spotless innings, with Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin, and Craig Kimbrel each adding a hitless frame for the 17th and the first combined no-hitter in franchise history. Chicago’s 4-0 victory marks the seventh major league no-no this season, equaling the record established in 1990, 1991, 2012, and 2015.

  1. Dave and son (and RBI and Scoop) saw a great one (and directly contributed to the winning run scoring).

  2. For the ninth I have switched to red wine (Zinfandel), with a bite of dark chocolate (sea salt and almonds).

    • What’s a good one? I find them a bit on the sweet side, though the same variety is used in Puglia for a dry and full-bodied wine.

      • I ran out of Uruguayan Tannat, so this is from Shenandoah Vineyards in Amador County, Inexpensive but passable.

Before that I was doing a Luigi Bosca Torrontés from Mendoza.

        • Also, used to decant tannant and serve it to our Argentine guests so that they could rave about it and then almost choke when I said it was from Uruguay.

        • Haven’t tried that Luigi Bosca. Back in the day (97-99), we drank their malbec as well as an unfiltered one from Finca Linda.

          • i like it a lot better than Susana Balbo’s. My favorite, though, remains the Etchart Cafayate Torrontés, which is a bargain choice in Palermo supermarkets.

  3. Pads, who started a knuckleballer (what’s that?) trail old friend Josiah Grey 2-0 in the fifth.

  4. Was wondering about the given name Bligh and of course his family is from a Pacific Island, Palau.

  5. Scoring runs in the 1st and scoring runs with two outs are characteristic of these Dodgers.

  6. At the game with Scooplew, Winnipeg Dave and son of Winnipeg Dave and husband of RBI! Gooooo Blueeee!

  7. Young Mr Sheehan came up from AA Tulsa, but he was just one of a sextet of startlingly good pitchers:

Tulsa, the Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate, features a six-man rotation that has torn through the hitter-friendly Texas League this season. Righthanders Emmet Sheehan, Nick Frasso, Landon Knack, River Ryan, Nick Nastrini and Kyle Hurt have made every start for the Drillers and combined for a 2.78 ERA. The rotation with the league’s next-lowest mark, Padres affiliate San Antonio, has a 4.29 ERA. Tulsa’s starters are holding opponents to a .197 batting average. The next-closest rotation, Astros affiliate Corpus Christi, has allowed a .240 opponent average .

But it’s not just what Tulsa is doing. It’s how the Drillers are doing it.

Led by its rotation, Tulsa is tied for the hardest-throwing team in professional baseball—majors or minors—with an average fastball velocity of 94.9 mph, according to front office data provided to Baseball America. The Marlins are tied with them for first at 94.9 mph. The Yankees are third at 94.8 mph.
