Game 130, 2015

Giants at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, MLBN, CSN-BA

Dodger killer Jake Peavy goes for the Giants. He’s 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 27 career starts against the LA team. He began the 2015 season on the DL, however, and didn’t make his first start until July 3. Since then he’s 4-6 with a 4.21 ERA. He’ll be opposed by Brett Anderson, whose every next start is somewhat of a surprise, since he’s not had a full healthy season since 2010. In fact, his 147 1/3 innings is the most he’s pitched since his rookie year with Oakland in 2009, when he threw 175 1/3. He’s 8-8 with a 3.36 ERA. Against the Giants this season he’s 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA and hasn’t gotten past the fifth inning in two of his four starts against them.

    • — just long enough for the Dodgers to outscore SF. (Nice to not need the bottom half of the 9th!)

    • I think Kenley can go an inning, as well as Howell, so if Greinke can get us to the 8th…Thomas and Peralta available to mop up if it is a blow out (either way). Baez has worked the past two nights, but sat for a week before that, so. Avilan probably good for a batter if not an inning. And then we have Ballslinger.

    • No we need BadGums to get gnocked out in the third, and then the Dodgers feast upon what’s left of the Gnatpen.

    • That would be HUGE. If they continue to play like they did last night/this morning, the outlook is MUCH brighter.
As I mentioned below, guess it took Kersh venting/admonishing.

  1. FO reacquires Heisy in order to give some commenters at this site something to grouse about.

    • Second that, WBB, but adding “pleasantly surprised.” I believe it was the 8th when Steiner said this was becoming a chess match between Bochy and Mattingly — obviously that didn’t bode well for LA fans .. . especially when the Dodgers failed to score with Utley at 3rd with only 1 out.

Interesting to see AJ saying this about scoring the winning run: “There a was a high level of panic.” http://m.dodgers.mlb.com/news/article/146640974/adrian-gonzalez-hits-walk-off-vs-giants
I’m wondering if he’s referring to Kersh’s admonition two Sundays ago that they need to play with panic/intensity. It seems like that wake-up call has worked — they’ve won 6 of 7 since then, 3 of 4 vs. winning teams.

      I’m hoping!

  2. I tried to pull myself away, but I couldn’t. I am glad I stayed. What an exhausting and rewarding victory. Now, WinnipegDave, get some sleep!

    • Sweet dreams. Last time I bagged it before the end of the game I dreamt that the Dodgers won. They lost.

      • Back when I would listen to the games on a radio under my pillow, I went to sleep when they had the lead — vs. the Pirates, I seem to remember — but awoke thinking they lost and knowing the score . . . they did and it was accurate and the battery was dead. Guess it sank into my subconscious . . . now if only I can learn something important that way!

  3. Can I come back in like Hans Solo – just in time for Luke to blow up the Death Star?
Let’s end this thing and then all go to sleep.

  4. This will go down as one of the best games of the season . . . or one of the worst.

  5. This stupid game. I’m going to bed. I have to be up in 6 hours for work. Dodgers have had 2 or 3 chances to win. Now Johnson will come in. However, good use of Jansen tonight.
    Later friends.

(Still hoping for a Dodger win.)

  6. Utley was running like a crazy person. So fortunate to make it to second. And it almost looked like he was wanting to keep on going to third!

    • Not being able to score even given that gift is way more frustrating than the run in the top of the 8th. Grrrrr.

  7. Unfortunate but not game ending. Dodgers still have 2 chances to SF’s one. Let score here and give it to Jansen.

  8. Nice to see Joc get a hit. Loved his little version of AGon’s hand explosion thing when he got to first!

  9. Dodgers pick up Justin Ruggiano from Mariners for OF depth. Originally a Dodger draftee, pretty good defensively, had one really good offensive year. Given the injuries, a useful acquisition, but nothing special. No players go to Seattle.

  10. The home run.
It is sweet when it happens for the Dodgers.
Even sweeter when it happens with runners on board and/or more than once in an inning.

  11. Forgot there was a game tonight. Not really – hard to forget LA vs SF! I was just finishing a 13 hour work day.
Anyway, frustrating game (Peavy – grrr! Bryd – grrr!) but we are still in it to win it.

  12. Sorry, fellow Dodgers fans and sabremetrics (sp?) devotees, but Pederson should not be in the starting lineup. Period. He is completely clueless. He’s hitting about .100 this month.

      • What about Van Slyke? When Pederson stopped hitting, he should have been sent to OKC to try to work things out. I am worried that all that is happening now is that his self-confidence is disappearing. Did you see the tantrum that he threw in the dugout after his latest K? Right now, I think, everybody expects him to strike out, perhaps including Pederson.

    • Just so we are clear. I don’t think that anyone doesn’t think that Joc is really struggling. The sabremetric concept of WAR was used to counter some suggestions here that Joc has not contributed to the Dodgers this season. OBP is a traditional stat.

  13. I’ve accused our Dodgers of having a collective ” glass jaw ” in the past….
    ….
I’m really hoping that this is the night where our boys ‘put their foot down’ and trade punches with the Giants, ultimately knocking them flat on the canvas…. (so-to-speak)
    …..
Peavy ( yes…. Jake Peavy ) seems to be acquiring the exact same rythym that the Cubs’ guy last night did…….
    …..
Do we have a heartbeat fellas?… If so…… let’s see it tonight !

    • Gonzalez and Ethier threw a few strong punches that last inning. Off the ropes and come out swinging.

  14. Dooooooooooodgerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrsssss!….Dooooooooooooooooodgerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrssss!
    ….
Wish I was at Chavez Ravine to start the chant!…

  15. Most of Peevey’s positive stats versus the Dodgers date from the time when he was actually a good pitcher, in San Diego. That’s no longer true, and he’s now mediocre at best.

  16. All is hardly lost, says Jay Jaffe at SI.

The current Dodgers are sixth in the NL in scoring at 4.12 runs per
game, and despite the two no-nos, they’re fifth in batting average at
.254. As with the Rays, a good deal of that has to do with their
    pitcher-friendly ballpark, and once their league-best .329 on-base
percentage and second-best .421 slugging percentage are taken into
account, their 106 OPS+ is tops in the Senior Circuit.
